LRT Safety

The transit system should be only a transit system, not a mobile homeless shelter or harm reduction site. It's allowing actions like this to fester that turn good people to vote CONServatives. When will the progressive left get that?!
Don't you get it? We don't deserve a transit system until we have solved all the systemic injustices that result in homelessness.

Commissionaires are giving out Narcan? That pretty much makes all the stations supervised consumption sites, no wonder there are constant issues with people doing drugs in the hallways
Only Edmonton Fire Dept is allowed to, not even the EPS is allowed to……

In the post I replied to it says "Number of Nalaxone deployments by Commissionaires".

I would also be surprised they are allowed to do that given their response to all other incidents is to "observe and report" only. Maybe I misunderstanding what that chart means?

Sometimes I wonder how current transit outcomes would have fared had the City never established the policy of using LRT stations as de facto shelters during cold weather events for a few years there. Just set such a bad precedent, particularly in tolerating that sort of usage beyond exceptional circumstances.

Heart in the right place, but you really wonder how many of the people who approved (or supported) that decision actually rode the LRT on a regular basis.

Look at the trouble Edmonton Transit ends up in when homeless people freeze to death at bus stops.

Another day, another call to Transit Watch at Bay LRT stairs which were almost impassible due to 4 gang bangers doing/selling/trading various items.

It's an ongoing and very real issue every single day and I'm getting really tired of this crap.

Walking home from work, checked Bay LRT south of Jasper, ~8 people selling/doing/unpacking drugs with some gang bangers deeper in.

Maybe the worst that I've see it.

No uniforms around even though there are cameras.

Called TW, unsure if a response, but look forward to calling them tomorrow and the next and then next and the next....

Ever thought of sharing this with the media? CityNews is fairly responsive. It worked when I did the safety complaint with O'day-min Park's icy sidewalks and the city responded quickly. I mean you can keep doing what you're doing (and thanks for reporting), but...

Citizens should not have to lead this.

You're clearly making an effort to affect some positive change by walking to this lrt station repeatedly and by reporting to TW.

I myself got tired of reporting to 311 and contacting Stevenson's office twice and not getting positive results. It was bothering me and impacting my enjoyment of downtown so I tried the media method and in this case it worked. A city manager even contacted me and told me to contact them directly if I notice an issue there again. I may not always get that kind of positive result, but I was beating my head against the wall with the repeated 311 reports with no outcome. Sometimes it's worth trying a different approach. Regardless, again - thanks for your efforts.

I do get IanO's point about citizens shouldn't HAVE to constantly monitor and report this issue and continually have to escalate it to different authorities--whether transit watch, 311, political office, the media, etc. The sheer volume of reports from IanO alone to transit watch should give the City enough data to know this is a problem spot and something needs to be done but instead are electing to keep their heads in the sand and respond on a reactive basis.

Seriously at least do SOMETHING. Close one of the 104 st entrances and have TPOs do a sweep every 15-30 mins of the other. Install speakers and crank some Vivaldi. Shit I'd even advocate to just remove the doors and windows so at least it's less pleasant to loiter. Anything to keep these fkin losers from hanging around that are continuing to degrade people's experience and perception of the LRT.

The doors and windows have been issues since day 1 about 10 years ago. Again, unsure why they were added other than maybe for pressurization/balancing issues in the main station, but they are relatively useless and continue to be problematic.

From 7-9 and 4-6, along with before/after major events these Downtown stations should all have officers present.
