Congratulations to our team in Edmonton, Alberta, for being awarded the 2024 Infrastructure Minister’s Award for Innovation in Equality for the Edmonton Government Plaza Rejuvenation Project.
This project features an extensive re-design of the outdoor space at the Legislature Building grounds and incorporates a new reflecting pool, fountains and connected terrace pools. The project immensely focused on creating barrier-free spaces to ensure wheelchair accessibility, using durable and timeless materials, and salvaging existing site materials to reuse them in the new design where possible.
Phase 1 of the project, which included the reflecting pool, was completed on time and opened to the public on Canada Day this year. Phase 2 of the project will see construction completion in Spring 2025.
Congratulations to the project team, alongside GEC Architects, for this fantastic win! Thank you to our Client, Alberta Infrastructure, for giving us this fantastic opportunity.
I generally like the new grounds - clean, simple and does not detract from the building. I feel it would be nice to have a bit more grass and less concrete towards the back part, but other than that I feel it is good.
That entire plaza from the Legislature to 99 Ave. will be cold and uninviting all winter. Suits the UCP perfectly. Is there any reason anyone would want to spend time there, even on a mild winter day? Finish the damn job and get the skating rink going outside the Federal building and add fire pits and seating throughout. Try some things to make it a winter destination like the fountains are (were) in the summer.
