This will be good to see completed. One question though, is there going to be more construction next year further west of the current section being finished? Personally I think I would be happy with a simple continuation of this design to proceed all the way to 124th Street.

Year 1 (2025) - 114 Street to 117 Street
Year 2 (2026) - 117 Street to 121 Street
Year 3 (2027) - 121 Street to 124 Street

Next year is the largest in terms of amount of construction.

We already got the worst segment out of the way too with this year since Jasper Ave -> Vic Park Rd via 116th is a big connector for in/out of downtown.

Is it the same contractor for the two other spreads?

The next two years will also provide Jasper Ave with it's most visually appealing and pedestrian friendly infrastructure - that being continuous raised crosswalks on both the north and south sides of the street (except for 121St).

In terms of contractor, I'm guessing the same one was secured for the full three years - would mean a lot more work and cost to go through the bid/selection process every year and I imagine a better price can be secured by putting all three years into contract.

Also, the city received nearly $9 million from the federal government's active transportation fund (first Canadian government to have such a fund) for this Jasper Ave work. Some other cities used their money for bike lane projects. That is a big reason the Jasper Ave work had to proceed at same time as other construction like lrt on 104 Ave - there was a deadline to spend it.

The feds (under Trudeau) refunded this active transportation fund ($500 million) and proposals from cities closed in Feb 2025. The city submitted an application but I don't know for what project. I wonder it they are proposing Jasper Ave work east of 109st?

We are actually fortunate to have wider space for Jasper Ave than many other cities have for their major roads, it gives us the ability to have more/ample room for pedestrians while still having an adequate amount for the road.

The congestion from the construction was a bit annoying the times I got stuck in it, but I could generally use another route. I will be glad when more of the construction west of downtown is done.

Maybe with luck they will only modify this sidewalk instead of ripping it out completely just to replace it again. Perhaps they can leave a large percentage of the sidewalk that is there and reconstruct other parts that have features that are consistent with the whole project. Looking at the picture it was a very simple sidewalk with some trees and that is all whereas the section that is now opened has a few more visually appealing elements that could be added to this little stretch.

Today's highlights:
  • Soil added to garden spots
  • Streetlights being added
  • Traffic lights appear to be working at 115 St
  • Bus stop/shelter has been added between 115 St and 116 St
  • Traffic lights are being replaced at 116 St
  • 117 St still has the old traffic lights c/w beg buttons
