The Italian Bakery building in Chinatown is getting demolished and rebuilt. It will have more front-end seating and a cafe, much like the Italian Centre. The building design looks good (for a bakery) and will help breathe some new life into Chinatown.

EEEK! great news. Any pretty photos you can share?

Anyone know or hear anything bout the property on 97 street where the Italian bakery used to be. The lot has almost been cleared of any former building. Is something new planned to be built there?

The Italian Bakery is rebuilding on the site (will include a larger product offering and larger cafe).

The new bakery will be larger as well, taking up the old bakery's surface parking at the north end of the lot. Bonus!

Looks OK but agree, a bit too suburban. And once again, the lack of a residential component is glaring for this location, especially given the existing (fire-damaged) building had some, so this represents a net loss of housing.

I've yet to actually go to the Italian Bakery. Is it as good as everyone says?

It really is.

I'd say so yes, but all the imports do often run on the pricier end for common items.

It's especially good if you have a European background or Latin America too as it seems like they have lots of imports from there as well. I love going there and picking out Romanian products.

They also have good selections of local products by people from European and Latin ethnicities.

It really is.

The residential unit that was in the old building will be in the new building as well - second floor, three bedroom suite with balcony overlooking the alley.

So happy that they are rebuilding... this could have been a death knell for that block.

The new, much larger bakery will really bring some fresh perspective to that part of Chinatown. Now, if the remaining vacant lots on 97th between 107A Ave and 105 Ave are filled in (only two are left after the new Bao An Chinese Herbal Centre opened), the area will have some great momentum.

outdoor seating and other amenities could be introduced to further animate the
