Project Information​

The new gate will replace the original version that was located on 102 Avenue. The original gate was dismantled and put into storage in 2017 to accommodate the construction of the Valley Line Southeast LRT.
In 1987, the original gate officially opened to commemorate the sister-city relationship of Edmonton with the City of Harbin in China’s Heilongjiang Province. Edmonton’s Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA) advocated for the establishment of the gate, and for 30 years it stood as a representation of the friendship between the two cities.
The City of Edmonton is currently working with the City of Harbin and Edmonton’s Chinese community on the design of the new gate. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2025 and be completed in 2026.

This is great and I'm glad to hear it's finally being replaced, but why is it going so far south? Wouldn't it make more sense at 105 Ave.?

I am happy with the location and am hopeful that more chinese restaurants, etc will follow and relocate closer to the gates. There are several blocks that could be redeveloped on the east side of 97th street and across the street from the new Winspear addition

I am glad this is finally underway. The fact the original gate came down 8 years ago with no plan and it's taken this long to get moving is an insult to the city that gifted it to Edmonton in the first place. It should have been planned for in the scope of the Valley Line East. Very representative of how Edmonton treats Chinatown,

I like your idea of extending Chinatown along 97 St south of 104 Ave to Jasper Ave. Imagine seeing a major Asian grocery mart in the space north of Market Drugs with some neighboring dim sum, bánh mì and pastry eateries. The former farmers market can be transformed into an Asian marketplace. Who knows, maybe all this will help kickstart the Quarters (finally).

97 Street between Jasper Ave and 102 Ave was the original Chinatown. Unfortunately circumstances occurred 50 years ago that lead to the two distinctive Chinatowns, but for the remaining businesses as well as the three elderly Chinese apartment buildings on 102 Ave, it would be nice to see Chinatown South revitalized. Also, I wonder why the LRT Stop wasn't at least named Quarters-Chinatown South?
