General Infill Discussion

I think it's important to add to this discussion that the ward names were not arbitrarily chosen by the City. Indigenous leaders reached out with concerns about the previously proposed names, and an all matriarchal panel ended up being chosen to work on picking the names based on place, theme, and the cultures of Edmonton. Each name was chosen for very specific reasons. The names were then gifted to the City in ceremony. The gifting of names in ceremony is an important honor and a core value for much of indigenous culture, to turn our back on that gift would be deeply insulting.

Personally, I think focusing on ward names was a bit of an odd choice as wards get redrawn periodically and the public tends not to know what ward they live in. But at the same time, if we had done such a process with Highways or communities I'm sure the complaints would be a whole lot louder. It's a bit like the English complaining about Welsh place names in Wales. It's hard for us to pronounce, but the languages predate our existence on this land. The vast majority of place names in Edmonton are in English or other settler languages. Is it the worst thing to make the effort to learn a few names in Indigenous languages?
What a cop out. My community has plenty of elders and we respect them, but that doesn't make them infallible.
A bad decision is still a bad decision regardless of how you got there.

Right on the SW corner of 116th and 89 ave, across from the U of A. Such a great missing middle product. Perfect location and not too bad on the eyes. Far cry from the “boxy” monsters. I believe 8plex + a suite above the four car garage (not pictured).

Have we gotten any corner CRUs or neighbourhood infill retail as a result of the zoning bylaw changes? I don't think I've seen any posted here on this forum or anywhere else yet.

The owners took me on a tour last fall and I was extremely impressed. There are A LOT of beds on this property and it is done very nicely, great location and looks great.

I kinda like the 60s brutalist vibe I'm getting, which I know may sound weird. It's unique from other infill, which appeals to me I guess. Is the exterior stucco? It doesn't look like it to me but may not be the finished product. I reserve the right to reverse my position depending on how it looks when it's done ;-)

I probably could have phrased that better, by "stucco tone" I mean that the colour is similar to stucco, like the one below. The actual material looks like vinyl siding.

I have an offer in on this house... and plan to make the changes to it as per the following rendering for a residence/home office.

I hope the deal goes through.

I like the wood treatment on the front of the house, roof is great, the new windows (nice size for good light in the basement), and the new front accents, fencing.

Original is cute, too.

I like that the original footprint hasn't been modified to much to make it interesting and the size still fits well with the neighbours.

These houses are often quite nice on the inside, although the outsides can be a bit boring, plain or just very similar.

So its nice to see more character added. Perhaps if this goes ahead it will also inspire some of the neighbors or others with similar houses too.
