How a neighbourhood restaurant in Edmonton is defying all odds

Northlands Coliseum, the former home of the Edmonton Oilers, is slated for demolition this summer after opening in 1974. Just a short walk west is Coliseum Steak & Pizza, which is celebrating 50 years in business — outlasting its namesake. The CBC’s Sean Newton visited the neighbourhood institution to find out what's behind the restaurant’s success.

A very solid smoked meat sandy at the Patricia St. Deli; I was amazed at the size and space in there.

I went back to The Druid for dinner. The place was reasonably busy because of the Super Bowl, which I found to be devoid of interest. This time I had the Irish Beef Stew along with a pint of Guinness - highly recommended!

Ventured out to Edgemont and Aria Cafe just off Lessard road. Very much worth the trek. French style cafe. Great pastries, But I also noticed they do a dinner service as well.

My wife and I would head out on a day we had nothing planned and ho to a brewery but now it seems we are hitting up new cafes.

I've heard it's quite nice, and I've been meaning to make the trek out there as well. Also heard it's a bit pricey even by today's standards though too.

Openings
  • Square One Coffee opened its sixth location in the Edmonton area, this time in Mill Woods at 7319 29 Avenue NW (Community Health Centre).
  • Jola’s Polish Cooking, from chef Filliep Lament (who had most recently been cooking at Nowhere Wine Bar), is opening this week in the evenings at Candid Coffee Highlands.
  • Mayte is a new Spanish restaurant opening at 12026 107 Avenue NW (formerly Ashford Pub) in Manchester Square. Its grand opening is on February 13.

It was relatively priced and did not shock my. But we care about quality more than pricing. It was still quite busy though. One of the staff told us that we can make a reservation.

when I was working on the Covenant centre in Millwood's I knew Square one was moving in there. They had their sign up even before the place was open.
