Sushi Niwa is re-opening in Rice Howard Place, with a new name. Perhaps this is a sign to start working downtown again.

Some highlights from Sharon Yeo's blog:

  • The folks behind Iconoclast Coffee have opened up Lovesong, a restaurant in an old substation behind the Oliver Exchange Building. Find it at 12015 102 Avenue NW.
  • Pyro, L’OCA’s restaurant featuring wood-fired pizzas and steaks, is opening next to its Edmonton location in the west end later this summer.
  • Back in May, Northern Mexican restaurant Maria closed.
  • After six years as Toast Culture, the restaurant is rebranding fully into its sister brand Birch & Bear. It closed on July 28 and will re-open on August 27 to embrace a pizza-based menu. The Wîhkwêntôwin location will offer a limited brunch menu with some previous Toast Culture favourites. After the re-brand, Birch & Bear will have three locations in Edmonton.
  • Century Hospitality’s Rebel Food and Drink has moved into its former Stingray space in Crestwood. Find it at 9682 142 Street.

Has anyone tried Kinton Ramen, the new joint in Terra Losa? I've been looking forward to trying it but I'm hearing that it's incredibly mediocre.

More from the Taproot Food Roundup:

Closings
Back in May, Northern Mexican restaurant Maria closed.

I had it in Toronto a few years ago and thought it was good, but I’ve heard that the quality has gone downhill since they’ve gone into expansion mode.
I found it a bit "meh" here and think that our local places (Menya Mori, Tokiwa) are better, but not to dissuade anyone from trying it!

I'm not surprised to see Maria closing, I always found them to be a bit hit-or-miss.
Hopefully another eatery will take its place soon...something with the same name recognition as the Old Spaghetti Factory next door.

I went to the new District Café location by the U of A. Pretty good, and it seemed reasonably popular. The location is hard to beat. Between this, Square One, and Deville, I'm glad to see some nice off-campus coffee options pop up. I like the Tea & Coffee Company in HUB, but it's pretty no-frills. (Kaffa is great and not really that far, but for some reason feels like more of a haul.)
