General Food & Dining Thread

Took a couple photos of the changes happening to the Coffee shop scene in and around the Highlands Area. The closure of some old classic standbys and some new players hopefully coming soon.

Nuestra is pretty much ready to open in the old "Plutonic Granite" space, sounds like they are mostly waiting for permits. Beyond excited for this one to open!

The new owners of the Mandolin Cafe locations have wasted no time in starting work, the space is being gutted. Word in the community is its the Candid Coffee Roasters folks who are behind this, but I have no first hand knowledge and its just rumor at this point.

Lastly, Take 5 is all boarded up. Big loss for the local senior's community.

Nuestra has a nice location just across the street from Borden Park (112 Ave and76 St).

I can't help but wonder how many people will boycott Candid Coffee Roasters over the Mandolin Books debacle. They may not have been directly involved but they could be a target.

Nuestra's location is sweet, should get a good boost from Concordia as well. If Felice's success is any indication there is lots of demand in this area of town.

I was chatting with a few locals, if it is indeed another coffee shop moving into the Mandolin space likely a bunch of people will stay away for awhile, but then if the coffee is good people will get over it fairly quickly. The coffee fix cannot be easily denied.

Food Notes for October 7, 2024

Sharon Yeo food, notes October 7, 2024 2 Minutes

Openings
  • Daniel Costa’s newest venture in the Citizen Jasper, an Italian restaurant called Olia, is now open. Find it at 12016 Jasper Avenue.
  • Waffle Bird opened its new location, featuring a dine-in option, last week at 10347 80 Avenue (the former Ohana Donuterie).
  • Sushi Wave has opened in the the 124 Street area, offering “West coast styled sushi”. It is located at 10812 124 Street.
  • Woodshed Burgers will be opening up a location in Sherwood Park.
  • Café Versailles is opening up a sister bakery in the west end called Café Aria, located at 20023 Lessard Road. It will open in mid-October.
  • Thanks to a reader, Anna, for the heads up about a new coffee shop called Nuestra to open across the street from Borden Park at 7601 112 Avenue. It’s always great to see mature neighbourhoods gain an independent!
  • New Indian restaurant Shree Restaurant and Bakery opened this past weekend at 2838 James Mowatt Trail SW.
  • The Tap Room has replaced the short-lived Slap Shot on 104 Street, and is now open at 10184 104 Street.

Finally tried Oil Lamp on 97 Street this past Saturday for lunch after warning to go for years. It was worth the wait! Classic Greek entrees and they have a $17.75 lunch special that was a great deal. We were there at 1:15 PM and the place was empty, which wasn’t surprising given it was a later lunch hour and on the edge of Downtown during the weekend. The owner (who served us) said they’re quite busy with office workers for lunch during the week, so that was good to hear.

Old school interior and the place has been open for 18 years - we will be back!

Even though it is not hidden, it's a bit of a hidden gem.

I used to regularly go for lunch here and loved the price, service, atmosphere and food.

Very timely. I have also gone by many times, but never went there. The other day a friend asked about it, so I will pass on the good comments and we will check it out.

'O You know George Broumas? Longtime friend of mine from back in the day when he and his brother Tom together owned Millwoods Pizza in the Millwoods shopping mall at the same time that I owned the Roman Pub on the other side of the Calgary Trail (Ermineskin).

Any word on when O'Byrne's and Japanese Village will be opening their locations near Ice District?
There is a new NHL season just underway in case anyone didn't know.
