General Food & Dining Thread

Gotta give these guys a shout out too! Absolutely great staff and love seeing them busy during lunch, especially since their location isn't as visible too,

I'm surprised not a lot of students have found out about this place, hopefully the word spreads.

The staff there are honestly amazing folks and the food fantastic, so I can see why. I'd love to see 2-3 more options though... and given their egg skills, perhaps okonomoyaki or katsudon.
When I talked with them not too long ago, they were talking about trying to bring in donburi and a few more options to add a little more depth to the menu for winter.

Goodbye Filistix. They will be closing their downtown restaurant on December 31st. (But will maintain their university campus locations.)
Well, that's a shame. Oddly enough, WFH had me at the downtown location a lot more often than I otherwise would've been. But I'm not really walking distance from them anymore. And sadly, 100 Ave isn't really affording restaurants the visibility of Jasper Ave.

I particularly liked when they had a patio and were serving brunch, because there was a pretty limited selection within downtown proper actually doing that, and they were an interesting departure from the usual brunch menu. It's also nice to have patio options that aren't just directly on Jasper Avenue and full of the idling numpty truck ambiance.

Speaking of restaurants near 100 Ave...
Any word on when (or if) Culinary Unicorn is opening? It's taken over the Envie space on 107 St.

Stopped in at Zoccalo today. Not wheelchair accessable , but assured they will be in the new year. ( 2 steps up and the door is not wide enough). But we made it. Food ahhh. Grilled cheese was very lackluster. ( Only chosen since I needed something but didn't have the appetite.). And like most places even if accessable, manovering through is tough.

Checked out Jinya Ramen on Friday. Great to see restaurant mostly full and lots of turnover. Portions are a bit smaller than I thought, not my favourite noodles but overall good flavour and very good service. Will try a few other appetizer dishes next time.

Hm, I thought the noodles were some of the best I’ve ever had (at least the thick ones in the 2010 original bowl). If you get appetizers with it as well, you are guaranteed to feel full. I highly recommend the pork chashu bowl.

Who knew this place even existed? It's right behind the G.Mac parkade. I don't think there was a restaurant in there before? Hopefully they give Amore a run for it's money. I'm anti Amore ever since a few years ago - my Bucatini Carbonara was made with Alfredo sauce rather than egg yolks and parmesan.

Went there with the other half before a concert at MacEwan back when playoff stuff was in full swing. They definitely got a lot of points for effort for their patio given that they're in an old rail-oriented warehouse on 109 street.

And yes, I do not tolerate non-carbonara carbonara.

Oh God, Alfredo Carbonara sounds like a total gut bomb.

Did the New Tan Tan permanently close just recently?

Also, the latest from Sharon Yeo:

The one on 97st sure did.

That's a damn shame. My co-workers and I used to frequent the New Tan Tan for dim sum. It was always busy at lunch hour, and the wait staff used to sail around with the dim sum carts. Needless to say, that was before the pandemic screwed things up. I stopped by for lunch earlier this year - just a couple of tables occupied, no more crowds, no more dim sum carts.
