Edmonton's Population

At this rate on the back stretch to 2 million, in a half a decade or maybe even less. I remember years ago when we were talking about getting over a million.
This level of in migration wont be sustained. I have seen this 2-3 times over my lifetime.

Current immigration targets and restrictions will result in a (slight) national decrease in general population for a few years.

But this is different than the past boom/bust economic migrations which mainly drove Alberta's population in the past.

Affordability issues remain in our larger cities; the longer they persist they may become an even bigger driver of migration to places like here both for Canadians and immigrants.

The population of the country will decrease in total? When has that happened outside of like war or famine? I’m not trying to be a jerk, really genuinely curious about this.

I suspect Edmonton Metro is about to (and may have already) surpass Ottawa Metro as well. And based on City Population alone, I think Edmonton is #4 behind Toronto, Montreal and Calgary.

I've always found it greatly interesting that Vancouver proper's population is just over 750,000 whereas the population for the metro Vancouver area (which includes Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, etc.) is just over 3.1 million.

We need to remember that the population for the metro Edmonton area will include Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Nisku, Leduc, Spruce Grove, etc. And that metro Calgary will include Airdrie, Okotoks, Cochrane and Chestermere, and metro Ottawa will include Gatineau.

Just a note that Okotoks is not included in the Calgary CMA currently but is likely due to join at some point soon. Calgary could push 2 million in no time. I suspect Edmonton CMA might be on the verge of 2 million by the end of the 2020s.
