City pledges support for new arena at U of A South Campus
The University of Alberta's South Campus arena project got a show of support from the city on Monday.

Council's community and public services committee agreed to write a letter of support saying it would be willing to contribute $20 million towards building a new arena, with some conditions.

The development, which would cost $65 million, would include the building of a twin ice sheet complex at the university's South Campus, connected to the Saville community sports centre.

One rink would have seating for 3,000 spectators. The other would be a community ice sheet with seating for 400.

The facility would be used by both the university's teams and the public, although the majority of the ice time would go to the public.

University of Alberta asking city for $20M for south Edmonton arena project
The University of Alberta is asking the City of Edmonton to help pay for an arena project at its south campus.

The U of A is requesting $20 million from the city for the proposed development for the $65 million South Campus Community Ice Arena project. The project involves the development of a twin ice sheet that would be connected to the Saville Community Sports Centre.

The main components of the project would be a rink with a seating capacity of 3,000, a second ice sheet with seating for about 400 people and a high performance athlete training and research centre.

The proposal was put forward at a community and public service committee meeting Monday, where parking was a primary discussion point.

Parking dominates debate over new University of Alberta hockey arenas
After four years of negotiation, parking was the key remaining issue for city and University of Alberta officials trying to negotiate a deal to fund a new twin arena.

Edmonton would contribute $20 million toward the new $65-million twin arena and high-performance sports centre on the south campus. In exchange, it would get more than half of all prime time or evening and weekend hours.

It wants to off-set that investment by charging players a fee to use the facility. But if the university refuses to provide free parking for users — and that chases users away — it could leave Edmonton holding the bill.

The fate of a pair of new ice rinks for the University of Alberta's South Campus rests on investment from the provincial government, says a dean at the school.

Staff at the university have secured about $45 million of the $65 million required to build two ice rinks southwest of the Saville Community Sports Centre and they hope the provincial government will chip in the rest.

"We're in discussion and our fingers are crossed," Kerry Mummery told CBC's Radio Active on Monday. Mummery is the dean of the U of A's faculty of kinesiology, sport and recreation.

The university has raised nearly $25 million from donors and received a $20-million commitment from the City of Edmonton.
