Ortona Armoury Arts Building Rehabilitation | ?m | 2s | City of Edmonton

Rossdale and Cloverdale yes but Riverdale has a couple of places. Dogpatch and Red Brick are favorite spots that I travel from St Al to.

Rossdale could support something if it was closer to the ball park.

And Cloverdale does have something at Muttart

This just reinforces a dire need to repurpose the Rossdale Power Plant into mixed commercial space that includes a grocery store, cafe/restaurant/pub, fitness facilities and a museum.
:Yes and to have some more high density development in the nearby west Rossdale area that has been empty lots for decades now.

^^sorry. I was commenting on the lack of even a basic food store, not cafes, restaurants and such. If you want bread and milk ,get the car out.

Project Update - Fall 2024

The majority of construction work for the Ortona Armoury Building Rehabilitation Project was completed in summer 2024. In summer 2024, Arts Habitat Edmonton began operating the facility (as ArtsHub Ortona). Arts Habitat leases the space to artists, organizes programming and looks after bookable spaces. The remaining project work was completed in fall 2024.

In addition to hazardous material removal, upgrades to the structural foundations and replacement of the mechanical and electrical systems, the Ortona Armoury Rehabilitation Project included:

  • Replacement of all external windows with replicas of the historical windows
  • A full restoration of all internal windows
  • Restoration of the hardwood floors
  • Installation of a new elevator for improved accessibility
  • Preservation of historical floor tiles in the lobby and music room
  • Restoration of the wood columns and roof trusses throughout the building
  • Maintenance of the original brickwork
  • The addition of a covered courtyard between the north and south portions of the building (now referred to as the solarium)
  • Site grading and landscaping

I will continue to stand by my personal opinion that the redevelopment of the Rossdale Power Plant, as well as developing the surrounding empty lots, is the single biggest opportunity to transform the city.

It's such a beautiful and unique building in the absolute centre of our spectacular river valley with already cool lighting features, potential for modern and dense housing/towers surrounding it and becoming an entertainment hub that fuses in with the natural beauty surrounding it. I know the city is in dire financial circumstances these days, but I really hope there will be a mayor and council soon that is ambitious enough to try and get development going here.

I feel the bigger problem currently is lack of vision, the last visionary thing our city did was Ice District which involved considerably more private than public money but was to some degree driven by the city.

Ortona Armoury is nice, but it is kind of on its own here and we need to more for this area to realize its potential and doing something with the Power Plant is probably the key to that.

Given current financial circumstances, it would probably be best if the city abandons its dog in the manger approach of doing nothing with the Power Plant for years because it doesn't have the money and instead encourage the private sector to take the lead here.

Yeah I think that ties in with my initial post - there's just no uniform vision for Rossdale or surrounding area, which is mind boggling considering the potential this could have on the city and potentially even being our unique tourist attraction that would bring in coveted tourist dollars.

I think encouraging the private sector to take the lead would be the right approach. Have the city provide some incentives and support where necessary, but get some proposals going from national and international firms and help bring the vision to life.
