Edmonton Oilers

Perhaps the existing makeup of the team - management, coaching, and players - is in fact continuing to prove something when it comes to demonstrating what they can and/or can't do this year.

Yes, that conclusion is becoming very apparent. If our division wasn't so weak, we'd be in major trouble.

If the Oilers were in the other 3 divisions, they would be 7th, 6th and 5th respectively. In our division, they are a point out of 1st. That should tell you all you need to know about this year's team.

Of course the Flames beat the Panthers 4-1.

My new theory is that we are sandbagging/managing just to ensure that we play Vegas round 1.

On their four game road trip the Panthers lost 6-2 to Seattle, lost 5-2 to Vancouver and 4-1 to the mighty Flames while spanking us 4 zip. Calgary and Vancouver are the worst two teams in the league right now. I know the Panthers likely got themselves jacked to play us but for Gawd sakes Oilers show a bit of passion. This team completely exasperates me.

To be fair, the Panthers had Bobrovsky in net against the Oilers on Thursday night, then they played their backup goalie against the Flames last night.

Great point!!
Oh wait, Brobrovsky played the game before the Oilers when they lost and gave up 5 to the last place Canucks and one of the lowest scoring teams in the league..

Things that make you go hmmm....

Exactly the point I have been making all year... If the lines keep changing as an "experiment" there is a major lack of "team cohesion". The Oilers of the '80s had tremendous forward line team cohesion and you can, to this day, name the players who made it so: Gretzky plus Kurri; Messier plus Anderson; and Hunter plus Semenko. When team cohesion suffers three things become obvious: player confidence goes lacking, playmaking ability degrades and incidence of player injury increases.

Interestingly enough, the Oilers of the 80’s also had tremendous “team cohesion” off the ice as well as on the ice. While the current team also has that, there’s been so much turnover that it’s probably not as wide/deep as it used to be and it’s probably not as strong as it used to be.

It’s also worth noting that even at this level hockey is still a game and if you’re going to be successful at playing a game it has to be fun and this team bruises easily at which point it ceases to be fun.

I very much agree with this.

There was a lot fan pressure, too, to make a change at goalie and I think the team with Skinner and Pickard was pretty tight - I mean they battled a lot of up and downs together on their way to 2 cup finals as a group.
