Edmonton International Airport (EIA/YEG)

So brutal for sure, no doubt this will be a major setback. I don't see transborder travel being replaced domestically or otherwise on a 1:1 basis which unfortunately means we are in for a hit on our passenger numbers this year. The cancelled WestJet YUL service was potentially a precursor to this fact. Unlike some of the Atlantic area airports or bigger hubs across the country YEG doesn't have the options to grow much internationally (for example using narrowbodies). Would be nice if travel to Europe in this moment gave KLM the confidence to go daily but not holding my breath on that.
 
It may be a setback, but if we can recover from COVID, we surely can recover from this. Also the whole US situation is so unpredictable, I wouldn't be surprised in a year if it is different.

Regardless, we may need to focus on more international routes to replace trans border (which technically is really international travel anyways). I don't know if all the potential additional international demand can be accommodated by the few major airports in Canada that focus on it.

Now this isn't to do with YEG, but there was the first ever direct flight by Air Canada to Manila that officially landed in Manila today.
First flight lands in Manila
I see this as a positive with many Filipinos, including myself living here in Edmonton. Hopefully this could lead to something involving YEG.

How on earth can this do anything for YEG?

Trickle down meaning you think it could somehow attract service to YEG? Or meaning it will just have positive impacts in terms of Edmontonians travelling to Manila?

Vancouver seems like a natural hub for many flights to Asia (as opposed to some other places in Canada that are more forced or artificial hubs) and of course now having a direct flight from Vancouver will make it easier for people traveling from Edmonton to there, as would coordinating or increasing connecting flights.
