Edmonton International Airport (EIA/YEG)

don't want to jeopardize what looks to be the start of a WestJet hub in YEG but don't want to give up opportunities. It will be an interesting to see what happens in 2024.
I was speaking with two WJ Edmonton based pilots this weekend. They recently joined WJ from two other airlines and joined because of the Edmonton pilot base. Both like the opportunity because they dont have to commute and said that the pilot base is part of a bigger plan here in Edmonton and the recent Atlanta, San Francisco and Nashville flights are the first of a few more (no time frame indicated).

Effectively, they both said this pilot base is intended to be part of a longer-term increase in flights and destinations.

From a YEG perspective, I still think that should not negate YEG management from pursuing other flight opportunities that Edmonton as a whole and the business community deficiently need. Especially because WJ will not be a savior for all things (for example, London given the 787s will always be based in YYC thanks to the AB government).

Side note, what is happening with this big cargo plan that was announced and received federal dollars for? Since that 2022 announcement I have not heard of any developments of this moving forward.

Safe to assume the gate work is a continuation of the couple that have been redone recently? As for Airline counter work Westjet area needs some love imo.
Westjet’s counter could handle being doubled but what space do they steal from? Flair’s little sliver of that un-used counter they share with KLM……?

It's definitely a time of transition for YEG with the significant scaling down of ULCCs this year and a lot of growth from WestJet. With the Canadian dollar where it is US carriers are not showing a lot of interest in outbound Canadian markets. Air Canada not showing much interest in western Canada. Foreign airlines increasingly tied up in alliances also means fewer opportunities outside of alliances for overseas service to YEG. I still think there's opportunity for YEG based on where immigration is happening from - Indian subcontinent + daily Europe service from an airline that has less slot constraints- looking at you Air France + NYC. YEG must be weighing their options pretty carefully right now- don't want to jeopardize what looks to be the start of a WestJet hub in YEG but don't want to give up opportunities. It will be an interesting to see what happens in 2024.
The likelihood of anything developing with Air France depends on what happens in Ottawa (I'm talking the airport, not the federal government). Air France has been very successful in YUL, YYZ and YVR and post-pandemic took a chance on adding CDG-YOW. This is now Ottawa's only scheduled transatlantic service, having lost both Heathrow and Frankfurt.

Air France has been serving Toronto and Montreal for decades and its more recent Vancouver flights have been quite successful. How a smaller city and airport supports non-stop service will probably give us an inkling of whether AF will expand further to other Canadian centres or just go back to YYZ, YUL and YVR only.

It's interesting that AF has also been expanding to smaller centres in the U.S. and recently added Raleigh-Durham.

Wonder if they could turn more check in counters into multi-airline use style ones like bigger airports have. Allows for flexibility through the day.
Not a bad idea at all for some of the airlines with only 1 or 2 flights a day.

YEG departures has a bit of the same issues arrivals has which is there isn’t a lot of depth of space from the roadway doors to the check-in counters which can make things feel a little cramped during busy periods.

Pretty sure all the current infrastructure is already set up for common use. It might be just a matter of changing some printed signage to digital at this point.

Among all North American airlines, Air Canada ranked near the bottom in terms of on time performance. In fact only one airline was worse - Westjet.

WS will take over from Canadian North around the corner and Canadian North will move to the island checking counters next to F8 in the mornings which are used by KLM in the afternoons. Sunwing will take over the old Swoop counters.
