Downtown

I tortured myself and watched the whole thing. So much didn’t come true it really hurts. Centre for business and travel the old town concept. I remember 1984 being such a painful period living in Edmonton
Well, at least you had successful cup runs.

you know that there really isn't any "free" parking and transit. someone pays, should be the user.
I understand the point, but when I go to a suburban mall and buy something at the same price as at other locations, the parking is free to me.

Transit is subsidized by the city, parking there is subsidized by the mall or its tenants. Maybe this should change and perhaps some day it will, but I suspect the reason it hasn't is because lots of people are fine with the situation as it is. So in the meantime making people pay for parking in some places like downtown while not elsewhere has and will only cause customers to shift where they go to the detriment of downtown.

Digging through my folder of old maps and am sharing this one of downtown because it's just neat. This is one of Mundy's maps of Edmonton, circa 1912. If you look close, you'll see the alley spurs that connected the downtown yard to all of the various warehouses, industries and wholesalers downtown. You can still find signs of the old boxcar docks on the backs of many buildings in the area, including many of the older buildings on 104 street. It really shows how industrial all of this used to be.

Gotta link it from the archives because my scan is too large to upload.

^ You could have simply snapz'd it an then it is easy to post...

Industrial mainly because of the CN Main Line that is now Qualico, ICE, MacEwan, etc. There is residue that can still move out of the core over time. The area denoted as "Reserve" was the Hudsons Bay Reserve land going back to Fur Trading Days.

I'm a resolution snob.

Alberta Precision Labs has their main office in what was once Manulife 2, across 102 St from Commerce Place. Surely they can setup a lab there, right? Then their patients can walk there instead of having to drive to the labs at the Brewery District or the Hys Centre.
That would be helpful for me as the only location I ever used was the one they are closing.

Closing all 5 bridges to Downtown at once will have an effect, everyone that cares about Downtown should be coconcerned.
That's the thing though—the city never said that five bridges would be closed at once. I refrained from linking this May 2024 memo to Council in a reply to you, thinking that I must have missed some major policy change. But attachment 4 of the package for next Tuesday's Council meeting reaffirms a similar situation what the original memo stated, albiet with a couple of changes to project order. There'll be two full bridge closures this year (Wellington and Low Level southbound), and Dawson Bridge might require night or weekend closures (pending detailed design). This'll have impacts, yes, but it's a much different situation than five major bridges being closed at once.

Here's the schedule from the May 2024 memo, for reference. If I'm missing something and there's a reason folks are saying "five bridges at once", someone please correct me.

Don't bring your facts and evidence into this. You can't breed hysteria about "evil government planners run amok" with things like that!

That's still a lot of disruption for traffic coming Downtown and doesn't have to be phased like that. Admin is choosing to do it this way. Some of the concern is also that the Valley Line West continues on top of these construction projects, and Jasper Avenue streetscaping will start this year.

For example, Edmonton Radial Railways had the same engineers working on the High Level Bridge reconstruction look at the feasibility of allowing the streetcar to run while construction was going on. The City is flatly refusing to acknowledge this can be done.

There will be disruption to 4 bridges this year. You're telling me that each some of these spans of bridges is only going to be close or partially under construction for one year? I'll believe it when I see it.

Downtown folks happy to see this work completed, but there's been continuous projects and disruptions for over 10 years, it seems crazy that just after 10 years ago Dawson was done we're doing it again. Does it really need to be looked at at the same time the low level and before the high level is being rehabbed?

I think there's some important discussions that can be had.
