Downtown

lol. you obviously didn't read or choose to understand my post. I wrote to work and LIVE.

If there's no reason for 'everyone go to a particular part of the city for a particular part of the day', as you put it, then there's no reason to live anywhere near the dt. Working from home in the suburbs, or from a nice acreage subdivision, in a big single family home is great!

I take back what I wrote.

You know what? Since 'urbanism isn't just making everyone go to a particular part of the city for a particular part of the day', then most post-secondary schooling should be from home. That way there's no need for student housing in the core. Wonderful idea!! Think of how much more desolate the downtown will become.

Also, all LRT expansion should be cancelled, as well since 'urbanism isn't just making everyone go to a particular part of the city for a particular part of the day', because what's the point of MASS transit to the core, when the masses aren't showing up (because they're working from their comfortable suburban homes) to justify the costs. Busses will do.

SMH. You can't have it both ways. It doesn't work like that.
K.

With the news on the CN tower permit, I've got this on my spreadsheet now.

Once other projects get running, we have a strong chance to have more than 1000 units under construction/on the way in downtown boundaries alone.

Edit: Fixed the numbers based on Ian's response, if we add in the 106 St project, we're at 1192 units and that doesn't even count the Qualico and Falcon projects that might come in, bringing the possible total close to 2000.

These types of tables are really helpful. (If it compells you to compile numbers for other areas - thank you!)

I've got tables for other areas in the core and Strathcona! But downtown's the one getting a ton of attention right now due to the number of proposals I'm seeing from this forum.

What's interesting is it's a reversal from 1-2 years ago where downtown was underperforming heavily compared to Wihkwentowin and practically any other area in the core, except the Quarters.

And hopefully Parks phase II, as well. We could be looking at a huge influx of new residents downtown by the end of the decade, especially if this creates some momentum and gets some other things rolling (Massey Fergusson, a Cidex project that has been speculated here recently, the beginning of ICE District phase II).

It's funny seeing this because I remember those articles on Urban Affairs back in 2021 where the vacancy rate was something like 9%, and now 4 years later, we have the possibility of having a time period where there could be almost 2000 units under construction simultaneously.

I am not surprised there was a bit of a lull after several big projects completed in the last year, but it sounds like some new ones now and more conversions may be starting soon.

I’d be interested in seeing those other tables!
