Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

On the topic of traffic signals brought up in the Valley Line thread, does anyone else feel that the MUP crossing along 114 St at 76 Ave near the train station is pretty much red 95% of the time? Coupled with the construction closures around that area, I find myself actively trying to avoid it on most days.

Nicely done, downtown YMCA 👏👏

Update on the Wihkwentowin (Oliver) renewal project

Exploring Options and Tradeoffs Round 2 - November 2024

"We have reviewed and considered what you shared with us about Wîhkwêntôwin ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ (Oliver), during the Exploring Options and Tradeoffs Round 1 stage. The Project Team can now share Round 2 of design options based on your feedback, including:

  • Driving - measures to slow traffic
  • Walking - sidewalks and crossing improvements
  • Biking - bike routes and facilities
  • Playing - parks and open spaces improvements
We want to hear from you!

During this stage, we commit to using the priorities we heard during the engagement to inform the draft design for the project."

The project team also released Chapter 2 of the Urban Design Analysis Background Report. Chapter 1 was published in May 2024.

100 Ave from 116 St to 109 St needs to be a two way path on the north side to match 109 St to 103 St. Having to switch sides on what's supposed to be a continuous bike path doesn't make for a good cycling experience for anyone. Except maybe to switch over to the south side west of 117 St so cyclists can get that gorgeous view of the valley. That entry before 117 St can be designed to slow vehicles down and put crossing cyclists and pedestrians first as opposed to what exists right now.

The city is meeting with some active transportation stakeholders on Wednesday to share plans for 107Ave SUP from 163st to 127st.

In some sections on the Southside of 107Ave there is currently no infrastructure of any kind (not even sidewalks) and then in other parts there is a sidewalk that will need to be replaced with a wider piece of infrastructure which will involve the removal of some trees and light poles. Rust is getting pretty bad on the light poles.
It will be interesting to see how they propose to handle the 142st traffic circle.
It would be nice to make these SUP at about 3m on each side of 107ave.
Here are some pics along 107ave.

This is going to be an amazing bike route for me!! I'll have to send an email and voice my support for it.

A regional/metropolitan district would probably be needed to get connections out from the suburbs because City of Edmonton has no incentive to do so.

On another note, finally took the new SUP running along the south side of Yellowhead Trail from 89 St all the way to Fort Road then up to 66 St. that was built as part of the Yellowhead Trail noise wall and Fort Road train underpass rebuild. I was surprised as I expected the SUP to end at 81 St and it continued on. 89 St is slated to become a bike route as part of the Active Transportation Network expansion, and one can cross over at 66 St to the other side to the new Fort Road/Manning Drive SUP.
