I don't even cycle but I'm jealous of you guys. It seems every time there's a proposal to dedicate road space for anything without exactly four wheels in Toronto, dissenters erupt and start shouting "war on the car!" It's nice to see there's some places in Canada that acknowledge the presence and priorities of other road users.

@Marcanadian Oh there are definitely very vocal dissenters and plenty who actually believe there's a "war on cars." But there's also an amazing community here pushing for safer, better transportation options for everyone, and a council that is mostly positive towards these things as well.

The worry is that we have a civic election just a couple of months after the initial trial grid downtown is set to be completed, and we could well see a backlash that results is a much less progressive council getting elected and reversing the whole thing.

These downtown bike lanes are long overdue. Great to see them go ahead. I do have a question that I'm not sure goes here tho. New bike lanes painted at 103 st - 102 ave yesterday, has moved the turn lane at 103 st southbound onto 102 ave westbound to the center of the road. Is a right hand turn (having to cross over the bike lane) still legal on a red light?

@Baronmine I suspect unless the city puts in no right turn signs that yes, it would still be legal.

Personally, I think there should be no right turns on red at all in high-pedestrian areas.

With bike lanes on the right hand side of the road there should be no right turns period and no left turns from opposing traffic. Cars should be forced to circle the block to complete their maneuvers. Bicycles and cars do not mix well! At busy pedestrian intersections there should be all-ways signals so that no vehicles are moving when the pedestrians have right-of-ways. Las Vegas eliminates street-level pedestrian crosswalks altogether at its busiest intersection -- Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road by elevating pedestrian crosswalks as bridged connectors.

Edmonton’s first-ever protected bike lanes will open in Downtown this July. With more than 7 km of protected lanes and shared-use paths The Downtown Bike Network will provide safe and accessible routes for cyclists of all abilities, making it easier for them to commute to Downtown for work, school, shopping, recreation, and dining.

This is a significant change for our city where the car has traditionally been king: Improving access for all modes of transportation in the core has now become a priority.

At our Spring Luncheon on May 18, we’ll look at the impact this Bike Network will have on businesses and on how we move about Downtown.

In addition Ian O’Donnell, our new Executive Director will present an update on the continued transformation of Downtown.

Public Drop-in Meeting

Time: 5-8pm

The City of Edmonton will be holding a public open house to discuss the upcoming bike route construction on 102 Avenue between 111 Street and Clifton Place. Construction is expected to start this spring and be completed by the end of 2017. Members of the project team will be present to answer any questions regarding the project scope, schedule and impacts. Following the open house, materials will be uploaded to this website along with a comment form for those who are unable to attend.

We were pleased to attend a Downtown Bike Network stakeholders update meeting this morning.

Updates:
- 104 Avenue route is being relocated to 105 Avenue. This makes more sense we think, will connect to existing infrastructure and less conflict with MacEwan/Rogers. Design is on-going.
- Paving of sections of 103 Street between 102 and 103 Avenue, plus some sections on 102 Avenue happening next week
- Might need to be a bit of paving on 105 Avenue, 106 to 109 Street. TBD
- Hudson's Bay will no longer be able to bring in large tractor trailors to their loading docs. They have agreed to use shorter urban-size delivery trucks.
- Green intersection/conflict zone markings going in this week. Some were painted on 106 Street yesterday.
- New traffic signals will start to be installed next week.
- Sections will open as they are completed.
- RFP out for new bike racks, possibly larger bike parking areas. New racks going up on 104 Street this spring that will double the amount of bike parking.
- Property Owners looking at bike facilities for various buildings. Enterprise Square put in 36 new secure stalls for employees. City looking at what secure parking opportunities they can provide in City parkades.
- Update to online resources including Q&A next week
- Street teams of 8 will be around the grid all summer and into the fall to help educate public.
- Bike grid team will present to Downtown business crowd at Spring Luncheon of DBA on May 18.
