Have a say in the Coliseum Station Area Redevelopment Plan
June 1, 2017

The City of Edmonton invites individuals to help create a new Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP) for the Coliseum Station area. The ARP will establish a new long-term vision that will guide the future evolution of this important site.

Two open houses will be held on June 12, 2017:

Location: City Hall, City Room, 1 Sir Winston Churchill Square
Time:10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (presentations at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.)
Location: Bellevue Community League, 7308 – 112 Avenue
Time: 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. (presentations at 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.)

Individuals can also provide input online from June 1 to 30, 2017. The input gathered at this stage will be used to identify key themes and principles that will help guide the formation of redevelopment scenarios.

The City is also seeking up to 15 individuals to join a volunteer community stakeholder group that will provide advice and share insights about the development and potential implementation of this exciting, city-building project. Applications for the stakeholder group close at 4:30 p.m. on July 4, 2017, and can be found at edmonton.ca/ColiseumPlan.

The plan will build upon transit oriented development plans in the area and will integrate and coordinate with ongoing work in the area, including plans to repurpose the existing arena (formerly Rexall Place), the Coliseum LRT Station improvements, and local revitalization initiatives.

Update:
The City of Edmonton is inviting the public to a round of open houses next week regarding the creation of a new Area Redevelopment Plan for the Coliseum Station lands. Intended as a long-term guide to the future development of the site, the ARP will build upon transit oriented development plans that have been initiated in the area and will coordinate with ongoing work, including the highly anticipated proposal to repurpose the Northlands Coliseum into a hockey academy and multiplex arena.

City asks, ‘What should we do with Northlands?’; launches plans for the site
City planners want residents to weigh in on what Edmonton should do with the Northlands site, as they figure out how to make the “well loved area” viable for decades to come.

The 168 acre space is home to two well-used LRT stops, but the number of people living in the area have declined over the years, explained city planner Mo Bot during the first public consultation Monday.

She said they're hoping to create a draw to bring more people into the centre of the city.

“We want to make sure it’s not a transit station surrounded by empty parking lots for most of the year,” she said. “We can do more to bring people to that site all the time.”

The future of the coliseum also hinges on these plans.

Open houses held Monday discuss future of Coliseum Station area redevelopment
The City of Edmonton wants citizens to help come up with a new redevelopment plan for the area around Coliseum Station.

The plan “will establish a new long-term vision that will guide the future evolution of this important site,” the city said in a news release.

“The plan… will integrate and coordinate with ongoing work in the area, including plans to repurpose the existing arena (formerly Rexall Place), the Coliseum LRT Station improvements, and local revitalization initiatives,” the city release said.

“That land that’s leased to Northlands currently is about 160 acres, but the study area will probably be a little bit larger than that to think about how the area relates to the existing communities and development around it,” urban planner Mo Bot explained.

Bot said transit would be part of that discussion.

“We’re going to be looking at how people move around the site, how they access all of the different things on the site, and so yeah, improving connections to the LRT station and the surrounding buildings is definitely part of the scope.”
