Alberta Politics

Sooo...

Demetrios Nicolaides sent a letter to "Alberta Parents". Ignoring how he managed to get a list of Alberta Parents in order to send them such an obviously partisan political message, the contents of that message are particularly disturbing.

"This is a special season to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the event that serves as a cornerstone of faith and brings the world a message of hope, peace and love. It is time to reflect on this profound gift and look forward with faith and optimism to the year ahead"?

"Your dedication to nurturing the next generation reflects the spirit of service and charity that the Incarnation of Christ inspires in us all"???

According to the 2021 census, more than 40% of all Albertans declared no religion or secular perspective other than Christian. As a member of that 40%, I find this kind of intentional "othering" coming on the commencement of Chanukkah and on the heels of the Bondi Beach massacre, to be particularly shameful. Nicolaides is not the Minister of Education and Childcare for Christian children, he is the Minister of Education and Childcare for all Albertan children, just as his government is not a government for Christian Albertans, it is - or should be - a government for all Albertans.

My Christian friends know how much I wish them hope, peace and love over the holiday season and the coming new year but those wishes extend equally to my non-Christian friends and our government and its representatives should be able to extend the same inclusiveness to all Albertans.

I wished I could believe this but. To many stupid people in this province.
Last election oil prices were close to record highs, so Smith had lots of money to throw at every problem. That has changed now and I feel a lot of people have realized she is not better than Kenney, probably even worse.

Well, they're bad in different ways and take different approaches, but I feel it all goes in the same direction . Kenney was more patient and less obvious about it, which could have worked if COVID hadn't blown things up.
Kenney is a pragmatic technocrat, and a populist with poor management skills and some questionable policies, and I didn't like him as Premier, but he's never shown anti democratic tendencies (see his criticism of Smith's Sovereign Act during the 2022 leadership race, for example) or supported secession, neither was he openly a bigot. In his own words, putting Danielle Smith in power was letting the crazies run the nuthouse.

Some movements were similar, like the push to private healthcare and going back to doubling down on O&Go, but I don't see Kenney putting weight behind highly ideological issues such as separatism, transgender/LGBTQ+ rights, etc. I don't think it's likely he'd used the NWC like she's doing, or going full on Maple MAGA (he's been critical of Pierre Poilievre's tendencies multiple times).

And to give some perspective, I don't like Jason Kenney as a politician, I would not vote for him or his party, if you against any reasonable candidates, but Danielle Smith is so bad she makes him look good and sane.

Agreed. Covid did Kenney in. He showed that he wasn't "right" enough for the extremists in his party. Smith is pure evil - when you have separatists controlling the UCP Board, that tells you everything you need to know about Smith and the UCP.
