50 Street Widening & CP Rail Grade Separation

Speaking of 50th Street….. wasn’t the overhaul of the overpass at S.Pk freeway supposed to coincide with this?

That should be done but I doubt I see anything in my lifetime...I'm 42.
It depends on how serious the province is on implementing the passenger rail master plan. If they are serious, this intersection and 51st Ave will be prioritized for grade-separation. Eventually, they’ll need to take care of Ellerslie Road and the Whitemud ramps too.

It would save 5-10 minutes for YEG trips into the city and is a real bottleneck for major events/Oiler games for folks from the South.

As was noted in the LRT/bus thread, Edmonton is not seeing an increase in transportation mode share even though overall transit numbers are increasing due to larger population. It's similar with biking - more people doing it but that increase is mostly because of population growth, not because fewer people are driving. With our recent 200,000 population growth, we added roughly 130,000 more cars onto our roads. Driving is still the best choice for large majority of people and too often the only choice.

As a city, if we want to increase public/active transportation mode share for a more financially sustainable city, and better maximize our large investments in those areas, are we going to accomplish anywhere near our mode share targets by continuing to make driving faster and the most efficient option? Do we have the money to keep massive spending on driving and transit - what is going to move the needle on transportation mode share if we keep making driving more efficient?

I'm not in favour of making personal vehicle driving to Oilers games faster.
