2026 Predictions

Thankful for more trips around the Sun while I'm in human form.

Starting this a little early so we can get all our predictions in.

Here are mine:
- Bonnie Doon sees development finally, but it's a 6 storey somewhere on the west parking lot
- Quarters development picks up
- Federal funding is a boon to development around downtown with affordable housing being developed
- New development of long term care facilities as the current ones are reaching end of life
- Discussions come up again about amalgamation with Leduc
- A natural disaster in the province brings thousands to the City for refuge again
- The Oilers lose in the first round
- Development in Rossdale picks up
- Holyrood, Millwoods, King Edward Park sees significant infill with more density around the stations
- A tornado hits the southside in late July (hopefully not)
- @Daveography makes a return to Skyrise which will be known as judgement day

I'll go too:

- Stationlands' second tower breaks ground (or base, in this case)
- Falcon 2 breaks ground
- Parks phase 2 is announced to break ground in Spring 2027
- Another 2-3 developments of 6-8 stories are announced and start construction in the Warehouse District adding another 500-700 units to the ones already under construction
- ICE District Phase 2 starts work on servicing the land
- We see at least one more multifamily development break ground in Blatchford (on top of the First Nations one)
- One new TOD project is announced in Century Park
- Condo market in Edmonton starts to see a revival
- YEG gets one new direct flight to Europe
- Oilers lose to Vegas in the second round
- I move back to Edmonton (please please help me here. Imma go crazy in BC)
 
A few of mine:

  1. Ice District 2 gets going...thanks @Markyeg for setting this one up for me
  2. Stationlands Tower #2 starts up late in 2026
  3. 109 St booms with construction of new residential
  4. Student Housing by Norquest begins!
  5. A new hotel FINALLY comes online (ALT, Germain, Hilton)
  6. Two new buildings go up in The Quarters
  7. A second building is proposed at Strathern
  8. Four projects are started/proposed along the VLW around Stony Plain Road
That's all I got for now!

Agree with all of this PLUS:

1.) Falcon #2 breaks ground in a month
2.) Regency builds 2 more stick builds to cover their existing Holyrood pit AND continues to demo the next set of empty townhomes next door.
3.) Fan Park breaks ground after the playoffs……including the Mini-Rogers Place.
4.) Parks 2 breaks ground in the Fall
5.) Both Ian’s Westrich and Autograph start on their 106th projects in the new year
6.) we get both Condor’s Frankfurt AND another European flight.
 
Stationlands Tower 2 gets a crane erected (ha) by Canada Day

We some folks drilling holes, digging, etc. to start the Ice District 2.0 servicing work for the first 300 units.

Edgar/Autograph officially announces their revised Shift project will break ground Fall 2026.

We hear some rumblings about a new owner for City Centre Mall and redevelopment plans.

Falcon II Breaks Ground
108 st and 106 st become busy corridors for Construction in the Year
Station Lands Tower 2 Breaks Ground
2 Midrises break Ground on SPR
The Mill Woods project sees Activity
A new Project Submits a DP only for the DP to sit in the System for a long time
The Parks I fills up and The 2nd Phase gets closer to Construction
Britannia-youngstown/Canora have a big year in infill and house demolitions
We get shiny new Renders for the Grey nuns/Misericordia Expansions
A Really Ugly Building is proposed
A project Stalls out leaving an open abandoned lot somewhere in the city
The Open Pit on 121st gets sold and we get a 6 floor mid-rise proposal
Stadium Yards Phase 3 is announced
The BMO site gets Sold Finally, But we don't get redevelopment plans until 2027

Transit/Infrastructure/Parks
Another Bridge gets Closed and Rebuilt
The Valley Line West sees Significant progress in 2026
The Capital Line Henday Bridge gets underway
Another Park Project is announced
O'day Min park continues to draw crowd especially in the Summer

Retail/Urban Life
WEM has more stores move around the mall along with new Stores arriving to the Mall
Kingsway begins to Decline
Westmount mall begins the Transformation into outdoor shopping centre as that mall is all but dead
WEM figures out what the hell to do with the HBC space

Sports
The Oilers Get to the Semifinals, get Swept by the Golden Knights and Florida Three-Peats
The Elks continue to Suck
The Patriots win the Super bowl
LA Dodgers Three Peat

A Flame War erupts between two members at least once

Weather
Edmonton gets hit by a big Crazy Thunderstorm reminiscent of July 18 2009
Summer 2026 is Hot but stormy
The upcoming Winter Suuuucks for existing outdoors with Excessive snow, Extreme cold and Sidewalks covered in snow
Fall 2026 is Pleasant
