    That building (whether due to neglect, poor maintenance, poor original construction etc) had a litany of issues from hazardous building materials to water infiltration and everything in between. Unfortunately the annex building was well beyond saving and I'm not sure how widely it will be missed..

    Just to clear up a few things - the penthouse does not have a private elevator. Yes Katz was originally going to build it out for family use (not specifically for his son). They did not keep the floor due to multiple reasons (including the fact they have a home in town).

    Residential requires a card as well. There is also already a double door to access the elevator lobby. This might be replacing the double doors on either main floor or level two?

    You need a card to go up the elevators already, although I wouldn't be surprised. My guess would be that it is a full height wall (glass or otherwise) at the elevator lobbies to aid with stack effect issues.

    I'm assuming they mean 80% of the rental units have been leased. Originally it was a block of floors for lease and not for sale (i.e. 31-45 leased, 46-66 sale), although that may have changed.

    Cost of construction in Edmonton is quite surprising, with our winters the amount of heating and hoarding required increases costs significantly. Even items such as heated concrete add up, on top of higher base material and labor costs like you mentioned.
