Town of Jasper Updates

I think Nordegg would be better suited to being Edmonton’s Canmore, since it’s not in a national park while still being in the mountains. That being said, it’s been considered back-country for a while, so I don’t know if another mountain town getting over-commercialized would go down well with most Albertans.
I think Nordegg is a bit out of the way to be our Canmore. Better suited to being the Canmore for Red Deer if anything.

Hinton should be our Canmore, but its too far away from our airport to attract the international visitors to it.

It is not just international visitors, Hinton or Nordegg is much further from Edmonton than Canmore is from the nearest big city.

Although Hinton in particular does have some potential because it is close to the mountains and big enough to provide more services to visitors.

Even if Hinton and Nordegg could offer half of what Canmore does (which they can) - it would be fantastic for the people who live here.

My parents have fallen in love with it. The mountains aren't as tall, so if that's your jam it's not perfect, but it's certainly lovely and unpopulated (sort of the opposite of Canmore, which has become an overdeveloped traffic jam in the last few years).

Grande Cache is a hidden gem. Pretty close to same time as Jasper from Edmonton. In the mountains but hotels way cheaper and can hike, trail run or mountain bike and barely meet anyone compared to Jasper NP
I can’t wait to try the hike up to Lightning Ridge hopefully this summer 😁

After being in Banff, I disagree. Hyper commercialized in a national park. The arguments against this don't hold any water.

Not turning Jasper into a recreational hub, like Banff is anti Canadian.

Jasper is a recreational hub, Ina very different way, and in some people’s eyes a way better way than Banff. Banff has unfortunately become over run and lake Louise is even worse, Jasper could use some upgrades and will get some through the rebuild but I for one completely support it being less commercial and more about the actual mountains and nature around it then an endless search for instagram pics.

I do not think that’s anti Canadian at all.

As the population of Canada intentionally increases, so does the need for access to the National Park System. This has not been expanded in equivalence to the population. There is no need to expand city limits, however commercialization of national parks is reasonable considering the parks system was created in the 1800s, long before the current Canada was imaginable.

"Allowing" Access to Canadians is absolutely just, and more importantly, serves an economic benefit to a country which is struggling. I'm confident younger generations will see the light. They won't build concrete plants like the other ones did, though.

Yes, some people actually want to go to a park to enjoy nature and not just to walk down a busy street with coffee shops restaurants and stores selling premium priced items to tourists. You can get that experience in most big cities. Last time I went to Lake Louise in summer the parking and crowds were insane. Maybe it is more tolerable for people who come from very crowded places overseas, but I haven't been very eager to go back there since.

We went to Canmore for cyclocross racing a couple years ago in September and I will not set foot there again unless the apocalypse happens. It was like West Edmonton Mall on boxing day with nicer scenery. Shudder...
