Bus Rapid Transit will be discussed at Urban Planning Committee on Monday, March 23. I was more than a little disappointed with Knack's quote in the Journal last week about rolling back the 101 Street bus lane:

"Agreeing the city needs clean public spaces more than it does currently, Mayor Andrew Knack suggested reducing the parking restriction to peak hours similar to 97 Street. 'I think outside of peak hours on 101st, we probably don’t need that dedicated bus lane today,' he said. 'Maybe later on we’ll need that, but in the meantime I think it does make sense to respond to community feedback."

The piecemeal stuff we're seeing now are the babysteps towards something bigger in the upcoming four year budget. This council is even more transit-friendly than the last one... and yet they're getting cold feet about a bus lane that benefits a route with 7.5 min frequency from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and consistently in the top 5 for ridership system-wide. I don't feel like I'm exaggerating when I say that if we lose this "battle" for two-and-a-half blocks of white paint, we might be on track for a huge setback in the mass transit "war".

I really encourage anyone with an interest in the future of transit in Edmonton to write to your councillor now. We cannot be a city careening towards 1.25 million people and still be losing transit infrastructure over 30-ish parking spots.

Unbelievable that Knack might cave to 1 loud record shop owner. Will definitely email all of City Council to remind them of that fact.

I think the bus route will also appeal to Royal Alex visitors and workers. Parking interferes a lot with both traffic and bus routes.
