Edmonton Companies News & Discussion

You’re not wrong, but that is exactly how Edmonton needs to start to act as well. Why not us? Instead of, well we weren’t going to get it anyway. It’s been decades of thinking that way and it needs to change.

One area that Edmonton has actually done well with this is events. From CHAMP car races, and Red Bull Crashed Ice, to huge concerts and sporting events—we’ve always punched above our weight. We need to bring that same energy to bringing permanent businesses, corporations, and attractions.
For a long time I have felt one of our biggest obstacles is our own sense of inferiority, which hasn't got better and may even have gotten worse in recent years. I remember when we hosted the Commonwealth Games in the 1970's, there was the sense we could do great things above what was expected for a city our size. Unfortunately, many of our business and political leaders no longer have that sense.

Its not that we should not be self critical at times and of course there is room for improvement, but I feel too many here have bought into the put downs from other places (some of which is due to envy or fear of our economic success and other parts from a lack of understanding) too much and are echoing them like someone trying to imitate their master.

Wishing for something does not make it happen.
Tell that to Walt Disney... it was literally in his theme song in the '50s an '60s -- "when you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are." Disney today is one of the largest corporations in the world. Your so-called "realism" is going to bury you.

lol. you're actually making a comparison to disney?!?

you know what, yes. let's act like disney then. no bums on main street. (or anywhere) only middle and upper middle class folks. constant cleaning. the landscaping is perfect! wow. you're onto something here.

disney is a corporation, first and foremost. they didn't 'wish' anything, they worked for it. we don't live in a fairy tail. what a bizarre comparison to make.

Interestingly, the Vancouver new article didn't mention Calgary either. I am not surprised we were not mentioned whether or not we are a viable candidate, we are generally the overlooked city in Canada by the media.

Montreal already has a number of international agencies and Vancouver is about as far from NATO as you can get, while we have a connection with northern airspace and a large base, so actually we would be a good choice.

Where is Edmonton Global in all this?

^like all the other city funded economic agencies over the years. doing nothing, producing to no tangible results and not being held to account by city hall, while they continue to extract tax dollars to fund their operations.

My point was that this all started with the idealistic dream of one man. If you want to continue this right-of-centre discussion lets at least move it off of this thread and into the arena where its is headed -- the argument thread specially designed for such encounters. There you can call my points "bizarre" all month long without disrupting the purpose of the current thread.

According to IQVIA Canada, which gathers prescription sales data, the total 2025 sales for semaglutide, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, in Canada was approximately $3.5 billion.

“It is a significant amount of money that’s flowing outside the country right now,” Hollis said.

That's great that it's going to be manufactured here. Now, just convince Vimy Pharma to move its head office here so it can be close to its manufacturing base!

I agree, seems to have worked for Imperial Oil. I do feel the city should start to target companies that have large operations here, but have their head offices elsewhere.
