It's a bad pedestrian location and no amount of pretending it isn't will make it not.

I'll throw a hail mary on the wishlist: Servus ditches the suburban campus and comes downtown.

I want Marriott out, the space to get gutted, and the best patio in the city to get the operator it truly deserves.

Former Standard Life Building - Partial Reso Conversion

Can't wait to see what they do with that monstrous street frontage. Huge opportunity.

It'll be real nice. That's one area where Calgary and Ottawa really stand out despite similar populations. Both of their downtowns feel much more complete. Though we do have a bit of an advantage being a late bloomer that a lot of our lots are filling in with residential, uni/college, and other...

    ATB Place - Redevelopment

I was in there a couple weeks ago and did not notice anything. Another case of Soon™

MacEwan's Allard Hall is effectively a big box that looks amazing. SML looks bad due to the incredibly unfortunate choice of exterior cladding. Best wait for full renders and execution before passing judgement.

People like him must dream of company towns where the citizens live to work and no amenities are needed.

    Town of Jasper Updates

The challenge with Edson, Hinton, and others in the area is that to flip to tourism they need to find a way to wash off the roughneck regressive taint. Small, closed, rural mindsets tend to be incompatible with welcoming of new or different ideas and cultures that comes with tourism.

    Massey Ferguson Building Redevelopment | ?m | 6s | Rise Real Estate | WZMH

Nah it's just bad design. Montreal's CHUM hospital looks better and has better urban integration than much of Edmonton's residential right in the core.

Good add. I meant shoddy on the part of the consultants or designers. Whoever fabricated it just made what was ordered.

    Manulife Place Renovations | 145.99m | 36s | AIMCo | MdeAS

It's shoddy work all around. If the building structure required this kind of frame to hold up the sign, it should have been designed to conceal or incorporate the frame into the overall design, not look like shit that was meant to be behind a wall.

    Tower 101 | 175m | 50s | Regency Developments | DER + Associates

Calgary has nearly 30% vacancy rate. It's wild that anyone is considering building new, unless that inventory is just so shitty that companies are desperately fleeing to quality.

As with all things, nothing is black and white. Different people/companies respond to different things. Some will respond to incentives, some to disincentives/punishments, some to shame and embarrassment. For too long the city used none of these and only used the "education" (aka: do nothing)...

    Suburban Development and Sprawl

Anyone paying attention to the totally detached sprawl up in Marquis to the NE? Proof that no matter what the city says, they will approve sprawl development that will come with ungodly costs to service without adequate taxation.
