Agreed, slow and steady wins the race. I hope that these organizations do not chase to the bottom of the barrel and wreck their business model. I would rather have a steady x% return, stable and valuable asset that benefits the people where they are located.
I really hope that the city/ province realize this and do not decide to sell them make a quick buck in the short term, then we are hooped in the long run.

Hopefully. The city does not seem that interested in privatization and ATB is somewhat protected in that they serve many smaller rural places, bigger banks are not really that interested in.

Also, the voters in these places have some influence with the current government.

I'd legitimately riot if these were privatized or even considered for it. Well run crown and municipal corps are an asset that shouldn't be thrown away.

I haven't seen the most recent figures, but the ones I saw in late 2025 or early 2026 showed a higher unemployment rate for Toronto than this chart does.
 
Yesterday I posted in tourism and branding a video from Barney’s Tavern. I re watched it last night and it got me a bit frustrated. Labossiere chatted how he was invited to a group of 30 local business leaders to come up with a strategy to land that Military financing bank proposed and how Canada was a front runner to get it. No one from the city or the province attended (supposedly they were invited). This seems like a typical ball drop. I wonder if Calgary will try to land it?

  • Edmonton-based Wyvern, an aerospace company, received $3 million in federal funding as part of a $6-million federal investment for defence-related firms in the region. CEO Christopher Robson said Wyvern will use advanced hyperspectral imagery from its satellites to uniquely identify “rogue vessels” at sea by their spectral “fingerprints,” even if their automatic identification systems are disabled.
 
I'm as optimistic and delusional as the next forum member here, but sadly there's no way in hell we're even in the running for the NATO defence bank.

I don't even think Calgary will even come close to landing it. It's not just a financial decision, but also strategic as well.

If by strategic you mean from a military standpoint, that is likely Edmonton's biggest advantage. But I agree, it is very unlikely, unfortunately. BUUUUUT, could also be one of those keystone projects that change the city's standing forever. I would love Edmonton to become Canada's "San Diego" in the sense of being a key military/defense hub instead of the government putting all the eggs in a basket that is already full of other stuff (like they made SD the Pacific Fleet's HQ instead of San Francisco or LA).

I shouldn't even bother replying to you, but alas... San Diego still holds the highest amount of vessels and personnel for the Pacific Fleet, as well as significant maintenance facilities and support operations, so while the formal HQ is in Hawaii, indeed, SD has as many, if not more, military presence than Pearl Harbor.
