Alberta Politics

This government will never give Edmonton or the cities another seat. Just look at the way they hacked up the latest realignments. Edmonton and Calgary should have a min of 2 more seats.

True enough... the party has continued on a disappointing path (speaking as a "traditional" PC supporter who has been politically homeless provincially and federally for some time) that started the day they allowed Smith and her Wild Rose Party to cross the floor en masse. It's one thing to have a big tent, it's quite another to invite the wolves to join you and expect to have a good night's sleep.

But still a lot of Spinless MLAs. Once she is gone they will come out and say they didn't like what she did.
Yes, Smith's popularity seems to be on the down escalator now, which if you look at other premiers from the past generally seems to just go further down the longer they stay.

So, I wonder how long her MLA's will stick with her, especially the more moderate ones facing recall pressure. Lets not forget, two have already gone.

Also will Smith hang on longer stubbornly like Kenney, or will she leave, or be punted sooner?

It is unlikely that Smith is going anywhere, party-wise. She may be alienating people like myself who saw value to the PC party, but her "fanbase" are absolute zealots.

Sooo...

Demetrios Nicolaides sent a letter to "Alberta Parents". Ignoring how he managed to get a list of Alberta Parents in order to send them such an obviously partisan political message, the contents of that message are particularly disturbing.

"This is a special season to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the event that serves as a cornerstone of faith and brings the world a message of hope, peace and love. It is time to reflect on this profound gift and look forward with faith and optimism to the year ahead"?

"Your dedication to nurturing the next generation reflects the spirit of service and charity that the Incarnation of Christ inspires in us all"???

According to the 2021 census, more than 40% of all Albertans declared no religion or secular perspective other than Christian. As a member of that 40%, I find this kind of intentional "othering" coming on the commencement of Chanukkah and on the heels of the Bondi Beach massacre, to be particularly shameful. Nicolaides is not the Minister of Education and Childcare for Christian children, he is the Minister of Education and Childcare for all Albertan children, just as his government is not a government for Christian Albertans, it is - or should be - a government for all Albertans.

My Christian friends know how much I wish them hope, peace and love over the holiday season and the coming new year but those wishes extend equally to my non-Christian friends and our government and its representatives should be able to extend the same inclusiveness to all Albertans.
