Stollery Children's Hospital

Yup, this one doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me. Though, the walkable services should be improving somewhat with the Michener Park development. Still an extremely odd choice, seems almost like it was chosen for how easy it would be to build (given it's greenfield) rather than any other benefits

Any other details? $?, timeline?
At this time it's just a site announcement. But they said in the announcement this allows them to:

- planning to determine space & service needs has begun
- business case is completed
- remainder of planning phases on track to be completed in 2026
- THEN they will secure the funding
- will be moving forward with site servicing immediately

Only benefit I see is ease of access from Whitemud Freeway. Walk is possible but a little far from Southgate for LRT access. Don't know a lot about the subject but thought there would have been a lot of benefit keeping things on the same site as U of A hospital and the other services but maybe blood services site was determined to be too tight?

You're right, this lot looks to be 4 X bigger than the blood lot

"......for future expansion....."

"As an undeveloped green space, the location would allow construction to begin without the need to demolish or relocate existing buildings......"

This is a dumb site, but I can see the dumb decision making around choosing it. Very on brand.

Couldn't they use the old super lab site? Probably not the best comparison, but the new St. Paul's in Vancouver sits on a ~18 acre site, old super lab site is ~16 acres.

I don't think lack of LRT access is a huge issue -- kids won't be taking the train to the hospital on their own (I hope).

If need be the 31 BRT runs right past the proposed site -- fairly straightforward to add an additional stop there.

They're aiming to submit a budget request in the 2027 budget.

They looked at it, but the piles from the cancelled super lab limit what they can do on that site. They either need to increase the budget to remove the piles, or limit the size of the hospital to meet the specs of those piles.

Thanks for that tidbit. I was going to suggest the super-lab site, given similar land area and greenfield status, with the added benefit of adjacent LRT access, but if it pushes the cost too high, let's avoid it to maintain the political will to build it. Aside from the very big con of poor rapid transit access, I can understand the decision to choose this site. It's crucial to have lots of greenspace around the hospital, given the number of children staying at the Stollery long-term, so I'm all for the massive footprint of the future hospital. It makes sense they're not building it directly adjacent to the existing Stollery on the old CBS site. There is also nowhere else in the city that you can find such a large undeveloped parcel of land this close to the main campus that also balances decent road access.

So the city has gone to great lengths to connect every hospital in the city to the LRT for a good reason. How about the hundreds of workers and visitors who go there every day?
