A month since our last update, and progress at Brighton Block has moved substantially forward. Notably, cladding now appears to be largely complete upon the upper level expansion, and the bulk of the glass installation upon the retail level of the heritage facade has now been put in place.

The Jasper Ave landmark has been brought back to life by Primavera Development and Hodgson Schiff Evans Architects, the refurbished 1912-built structure to breathe new life into the surrounding streetscape. Set to encompass a mix of commercial uses including retail, office space, and a rooftop cafe, the re-imagined Brighton Block will add some much-needed pizzazz to this oft-overlooked stretch of Jasper Ave.

The glass-faced expansion adds three extra storeys to the structure, its generous setback to both bring the addition back from the streetscape, while simultaneously creating a natural space for the aforementioned rooftop cafe and terrace.

While it is still early days in terms of Jasper Ave's return to glory, moves such as this will hopefully go a long way towards bringing the city around to the notion that there is something special about Edmonton's historic city centre. One project at a time, the case for downtown Edmonton has been making slow but steady progress.

SkyriseEdmonton will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
