Coming soon to West Edmonton, to the intersection of 100 Ave NW and 182 St NW, the new AUPE Headquarters by Next Architecture will be sure to inject a significant degree of modernist design to an often overlooked corner of the city. The multi-volume, four-storey, modern commercial building will encompass 120,000 square feet of top tier office space, set for completion by 2020.

The new home of AUPE, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, has been designed unconventionally in an effort to foster a number of aims, from interpersonal creative collaboration to environmental sustainability.

The structure will make use of a number of green materials and mechanical systems, including solar power, in an effort to reduce the office block's carbon footprint and heating/cooling costs.

Inside, AUPE HQ will be airy and bright, its asymmetrical footprint to necessitate the creation of irregular, yet efficient spaces. Natural light will be a major factor in the design, the ample windows and skylights to help bring the outdoors in.

Perhaps the most fascinating part of the project (for now, at least) is the A360 Autodesk 3D model of the structure which can be accessed online. Completely hands on and fully manipulative, the model can be exploded, flipped, tilted, and opened up at whim - the perfect pastime for the many architecture and design geeks among us.

SkyriseEdmonton will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
