Edmonton's main street is about to undergo the next phase of a major renewal which began in 2013. Now complete between 100 Street and 102 Street, the City of Edmonton is looking to extend the renewal east to 96 Street in The Quarters.

An open house held last Thursday at the reconstructed Alberta Hotel provided the public with information on what to expect from the design, and solicited feedback on the Jasper Avenue New Vision project.

Continuing the theme of the first phase, the renewal seeks to re-establish Jasper Avenue as Edmonton's main street by reducing the width of traffic lanes, providing more sidewalk space for people, as well as extending the new style of decorative paving and street furniture further along the avenue. The number of driving lanes is expected to remain unchanged.

The proposal also shows a handful of separated bike lanes, to help connect the downtown bike grid to the 100 Street Funicular, as well as re-establishing connections on the Heritage Trail walking route.

The first phase of Jasper Avenue New Vision coincided with an urgent need to replace the roof of Central LRT Station, which runs underneath Jasper Avenue. Similarly, this next phase is set to coincide with repairs to part of the Shaw Conference Centre which was built underneath the avenue.

The ultimate goal of the project will see this renewal extended further east to 92 Street, and west to 109 Street. A separate renewal project, Imagine Jasper Avenue, will see similar public realm improvements to the avenue extended west through the Oliver neighbourhood to 124 Street. A temporary trial saw two lanes of Jasper Avenue turned into people spaces over the summer of 2017.
