Whitemud Drive speed suggestion project not moving forward despite success
A pilot project aimed at improving travel time on Whitemud Drive, which was hailed a success by the City of Edmonton, will not move forward right now because of a lack of funding.

In the summer of 2015, digital signs were posted on a section of Whitemud Drive, suggesting a speed for drivers in order to avoid congestion and optimize travel time.

The project found that when drivers reduced their speed, congestion at on-ramps was reduced. The study also found that average speed during peak periods actually increased by 30 kilometres per hour.

Despite the success, the city said the project has been put on hold.

“There is currently no funding for the permanent installation of this project,” Maya Filipovic with the City of Edmonton said in an email to Global News.

It never ceases to amaze me the engineering that went into widening the Quesnell Bridge.

Pretty ingenious -- knee-brace extension with post-tensioned surface rods. It is this kind of engineering that allows for creative design solutions. Structural redundancy allows for replaceable components should they be needed in the future. Good eye @Daveography!

I was hoping they would start it this year. Wouldn't it be nice to have the Valley overpass completion over the WM with it's landscaping etc to coincide with the MESS the WM is underneath the 75th overpass at the same time?

Whatever happened to the Whitemud Drive proposal that was from Henday all the way to, I believe it's Hwy 60? Is that shelved for now?

I get the feeling all parties at that table (Parkland County, Enoch Cree Nation, City of Edmonton and Government of Alberta) have been struggling to figure out an agreement over that road for awhile now. There is a pdf from Alberta Transportation (that I can’t seem to get to load) regarding project planning the upgrade of 628/Whitemud from HWY 60 to the Edmonton boundary that is from 2008 yet nothing so far.

That link should have been completed 10 years go for sure... it's dangerous and crazy volumes there at times.
It’s a goat trail alright

Does anyone know what they're doing on Whitemud Drive at the west interchange with the Henday. Widening work has been completed on the Henday for a while now but Whitemud is still a construction zone.

Description: This project will involve renewing Whitemud Drive at west Anthony Henday between the Transportation Utility Corridor limits.
Latest Update: The tender has been sent out and is closing in July 2023. Construction is anticipated for late 2023 or early 2024.

If there were safety-minded brains involved, the work would include expanding safe length of south-turning lanes from WMD to AHD just west of the overpass ... but its unclear if that's been considered.
