Valley Line LRT | TransEd/Marigold | City of Edmonton

The challenge is all the existing access points for 102ave. Hard to retroactively do those things.

One alternative would be to essentially modal filter/block the north side of 102ave so there’s way less points of conflict. Sort of like 100ave from 163-149st.

Keep a few that connect through. But most could close.

funny for you to say this would be a hard challenge to make happen while also providing an example of a design change that would make it pretty easy ;) modal filters on all streets abutting to 102ave except for main roads (109st, 97st?) shouldn't be a radical idea in the downtown of a city of 1.25M. It would also do a lot of good for bike/active transport reception from the general public if we had segments that are fully built out so people can see/experience the benefits of proper infrastructure. Imagine if Edmonton finally got one(!!!!) road that was centered around usability for non-car traffic. Basically the opposite side of the painted bike gutters argument

Haha. That’s what I mean though. A full 102ave closure causes challenges as there are numerous buildings and parking entrances onto 102 that couldn’t be fully shut off.

But a major modal filter approach would likely get you 80% of the traffic reduction. But keep accessibly the parking and other entrances needed.

I only think this works in 109-124st section though. In 97-109 I think it’ll just cause a lot more people turning onto 102 who were simply trying to cross it.

Reopening of 104 Avenue between 121 Street and 105 Street

On April 14, Marigold reduced traffic on 104 Avenue to a single lane in either direction, and closed several accesses on the south side of the road, as part of the accelerated roadwork associated with the Valley Line West LRT. On December 9, 2025, 104 Avenue between 121 Street and 105 Street reopened to two lanes in either direction. All access closures on the south side of 104 Avenue also reopened.

What you can expect:
• East/west traffic on 104 Avenue is open to two lanes of traffic in either direction.
• North/south access across 104 Avenue is maintained at 121 Street, 118 Street, 116 Street, 114 Street, 112 Street, 109 Street, and 105 Street.
• Other cross streets have reopened to right in/right out access.
• Most left turn movements are maintained at 121 Street, 118 Street, 116 Street, 114 Street, 112 Street, 109 Street, 107 Street, and 105 Street.
• Pedestrian access is open throughout the area.
• Bike access across and adjacent to 104 Avenue is maintained.

While the majority of the roadwork is complete and traffic along 104 Avenue has reopened, construction in the area will be ongoing until completion. The public will be notified ahead of further disruptions. For detailed information of what this area will look like in its final configuration, check out the City of Edmonton’s Valley Line West LRT Booklet.

I drove up and down 104 Ave this past weekend. No complaints other than the 2 WB lanes narrowing down to 1 WB lane west of 121 St.

102 Ave is completely closed between 104 St and 102 St, so I hope they'll begin hooking up the VLW line to the VLSE line sometime this winter or spring. The sidewalks on both sides of 102 Ave are still open, pedestrians can access the Atrium restaurant.

Edmonton is filling out nicely with alternative modes of transportation. I don't expect it to be finalized with what is already under construction -- I see several aerial trams in Edmonton's future, a river conveyance, an expansion of the Radial Railway and extensive fingering of MUP and bicycle routes throughout the City. If we continue to propose solid ideas and projection of future possibilities the City will "get there" in a leadership position with exceptional character and artful build-outs to its credits. However, we should not be willing to accept these "candy-cane lane" 6-storey constructs as moving us closer to the utopia we are all dreaming of.
