Valley Line LRT | TransEd/Marigold | City of Edmonton

I get the logic behind trying to reduce traffic delays by having the train use regular signals instead of crossing harms. But as the massive rise in collisions, injuries, and pedestrian fatalities show: Edmonton drivers are too stupid to be trusted with lights. Time for crossing arms at all intersections, not just train crossings!

I forced to agree that Edmonton drivers are too stupid to exist with tram style LRT. And I need to modify my stance on crossing arms. I had hoped we could avoid them but i believe they need to be put on all truck routes and and all turnoffs to feeder roads from truck routes that cross the tracks. So for the current Valley line this would be the crossings of Whitemud, 51st ave, Roper road, 82nd ave and 90th ave.

I also hate to cave, but at this point, it would be a matter of protecting the investment that was made, imo, and if that is with adding crossing arms, so be it. This is absolutely ridiculous, and the drivers who managed to be stupid enough to hit the trains should lose their right to drive permanently.

I think the compromise of the valley line is that we want a tram centrally, and an LRT/light metro in the suburbs. I wonder if the compromise is doing crossing arms in the suburbs? And if that increases speeds, awesome. But keeping the central areas without arms feels important too.

I agree - anything south of Davies is designed for high vehicle speeds and that's going to increase the likelihood of collisions because a train simply can't stop in time OR the turning vehicles are looking for oncoming traffic and may not be looking as far over as the train tracks.

I like the idea of gates for anything south of Davies and west of WEM and keep the central parts more accessible and tram-like.

TBH, I think we'll be seeing the same issues at AHD onramps once they open to trains etc.

One of the 2nd anniversary news clips said that motor vehicle - Valley Line LRV collisions are down significantly in 2025 compared to 2024. So it's trending in the right direction. I think more of the light up no right turn signs with the word "TRAIN" may help. I can only think of two locations where they've installed it, turning right from 66 St northbound onto Whitemud eastbound, and 83 St southbound onto Whyte Ave westbound.

They have the LED TRAIN sign lit up at any right turn crossing a track. I wonder if they should put them at left turns (like the light at a left turn next to a crossing.

They can still be ignored. I propose a concierge/butler type service, where a perfectly dressed older man with a posh British accent knocks on the driver's window and politely but firmly informs the driver of the approaching train, before making a small bow and moving gracefully away. Cause I don't know how else to do it...
