I've always wanted to create something like this to help us become inspired or encourage us with our city building; to create density, spaces, places that mirror amazing spots from the places we go to. Go!

I'll kick things off with some of my recent walking tour of Toronto.

Not this time, but I've followed it since it's 'rejuvenation' has occurred and had one of the initial planners come speak at an event WAY back.

A few more city scenes.

It is quite a contrast to our downtown, especially the TO pictures. I have criticisms of that city, but they have figured out how to have a very vibrant downtown and it has enhanced their city.

It is too bad we did not get the Cineplex in Connect Centre. We have lots of banks downtown, as does TO, but at least they have many other things too.

The Mirvish Theatre, which I walked by when I was there last fall, reminds me a bit of the Princess, no? It was a bit unexpected how a discount retailer became such a benefactor of theatre. I wonder who our Mirvish is, I hope someone is out there.

While the Mirvish might remind us of the Princess, other than age and street presence there are few similarities...

Depending on its configuration, the Mirvish can seat either 1,600 or 2,000 patrons while the Princess can only seat 400 in the main theatre.

It's also worth noting that the difference isn't just reflected in the size of the "theatre box", it's the inability to add and manage vertical circulation and exiting, washrooms, handicap access, set construction and fly-spaces, green rooms, loading, coat check, concessions, reception space, etc. in addition to abatement and systems upgrades.

That is interesting and impressive, it looks considerably smaller from the street. I did not go inside, so had no idea about the capacity.

It does look very nice inside from the pictures, so no doubt the cost to refurbish and renovate it was substantial.

The Princess is then around the size of the nearby Westbury Theatre. I am guessing sadly no Mirvish for Edmonton, at least since Winspear being gone for decades now.
