City improves transit centres’ safety and access
May 12, 2017

Edmonton Transit customers will see major improvements this year at several transit centre locations. Starting this May, the City will replace three transit centre buildings and upgrade road surfaces and sidewalks at a number of locations. The work is aimed at improving customer convenience and safety.
Replacement of three of the oldest bus transit buildings - Belvedere, Castle Downs and Jasper Place - begins this summer and is expected to be completed in 2018. Planned improvements include:
  • Safety enhancements (more security cameras and improved sight lines)
  • Increased comfort (improved indoor heated waiting area with additional seating)
  • Site beautification (public art installation, building design and platform improvements)
In addition, upgrades to busways and sidewalks will begin this May with Stadium and Coliseum transit centres. Then Capilano, Castle Downs, Northgate, Lakewood, Meadowlark, Jasper Place, West Edmonton Mall, and Westmount will follow later this summer. These projects are expected to be completed by year end.

The City aims minimize impacts to customer travel. Bus service continues during construction, but some bus stops will temporarily move and some transit centres will temporarily close in order to complete the work quickly and safely. Transit users should leave extra travel time to find their new bus stop locations. Bus schedules are not affected and LRT access remains the same.

The federal-provincial Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF) has allowed the City to budget $37.75 million toward transit centre improvements. Overall, the City of Edmonton is embarking on 46 PTIF projects with an approved budget of $297.3 million.
