Edmonton Oilers fan rally transforms Churchill Square into sea of orange
Hundreds of people took to Churchill Square Thursday afternoon for the city’s Orange Crush rally for fans to cheer on the Edmonton Oilers.

Fans dressed in Oilers gear, proudly waving Oilers flags, gathered to show support for the team as they get set to play Game 5 against the San Jose Sharks at home Thursday night.

Mayor Don Iveson was on hand with members of city council, all dressed in their finest Orange Crush gear.

Several former members of the Edmonton Oilers also took part, including Raffi Torres and Fernando Pisani, who were both with the team during the 2006 Stanley Cup run.

“Thanks for everybody for coming today. The last couple weeks has been a blast,” Pisani said, adding it’s been great catching up with some of his former teammates.

Round dance trail leads Oilers-loving Logan Alexis Singers to Rogers Place
When Robin Alexis and his brothers were growing up in the ’80s, there were two constants in life — round dance and hockey.

The brothers grew up on the round dance trail, following their father Logan as he sang and drummed his way from ceremony to ceremony across Alberta’s aboriginal communities.

When the brothers weren’t on the trail, they laced up their skates for pickup games at the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, about 60 km northeast of Edmonton. Or they gathered around the television, with its three channels, to watch Wayne Gretzky dazzle Oilers fans.

In front of a buzzing playoff crowd in Rogers Place, the Logan Alexis Singers are once again bringing together hand drums and hockey jerseys.

On April 12, the singers drummed their song in honour of Connor McDavid in front of a sea of copper, blue and orange in Ford Hall as the Oilers launched their first playoff run in over a decade. The drummers repeated the performance for Thursday night’s home game crowds.

“We just want to give a thumbs up to the Oilers organization and Connor McDavid and Wayne Gretzky,” said Robin Alexis, 47. “We’re Treaty 6, this is our territory, we’re always here, and we love hockey.”

Spending at city centre bars increase 24 per cent during Oilers-Sharks series
Downtown Edmonton bars are putting up numbers that are almost as impressive as the Oilers during this spring’s playoff run.

In the six first-round games against the San Jose Sharks, spending on credit and debit cards at city centre nightspots was 24 per cent higher than for the same days last year, according to figures released Wednesday by Moneris, a major Canadian transaction processor.

Revenues at the 300 to 400 establishments examined were up 28 per cent during home games.

“This is a consistent metric that we see. We have looked at these results for large sporting events, in playoffs and for Olympics,” said Malcolm Fowler, vice-president of financial institutions and partners at Moneris.

“Canadians like to congregate and watch their sports heroes. They don’t want to stay in their homes … We have seen it even outside arenas, watching big screens.”

Those crowds are likely to keep growing — and spending — as the new series against the Anaheim Ducks heats up.

‘Let’s Go Oilers’ sign lights up downtown Edmonton building
A nine-storey building on Jasper Avenue will be sporting a new look during Edmonton’s playoff run: a “Let’s Go Oilers” light projection.

The message will light up the side of the Jasper OnEleven building at 11020 Jasper Avenue throughout the Oilers’ playoff run.

It will be visible to anyone headed west along Jasper Avenue towards 111 Street. It can also be seen from the intersection of 109 Street and Jasper Avenue.

The light-up sign was set up by the Edmonton Economic Development Corp. with the support of Canterra Suites Hotel and Vertica Residents.
