Planning a Northeast River Crossing: Information Session

April 5, 2017

Residents are invited to a public information session for the Northeast River Crossing (NERC) Functional Planning Study. This study will identify a potential location for a proposed future roadway and bridge over the North Saskatchewan River, connecting Edmonton and Strathcona County.

There are two identical public information sessions where participants will have an opportunity to learn more about the project, its timeline and to provide input of the study area.

Date: Wednesday, April 19, 2017
Time: 4-8 p.m. (project presentations at 5:30 and 7:00 p.m.)
Location: Bethel Lutheran Church, 298 Bethel Drive, Sherwood Park

Date: Thursday, April 20, 2017
Time: 4-8 p.m. (project presentations at 5:30 and 7:00 p.m.)
Location: Horse Hill School, 19355 Meridian Street NW, Edmonton

This is the first phase in the NERC Functional Planning Study, a joint partnership between the City of Edmonton, the City of Fort Saskatchewan, Strathcona County, Sturgeon County and Alberta Transportation. The proposed bridge would provide an alternate route over the river, connecting Highways 21 and 15 (Manning Drive), improving access to Highway 63 leading north. Construction of the proposed bridge is not expected for another 25 to 35 years.

'It's about you, your kids, the future': Highway engineers start controversial task of picking route for northeast bridge
Highway engineers are starting work to finally pin down the location of a controversial northeast bridge over the North Saskatchewan River.

The bridge would create a new connection between Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan. But should the province pick an easier route across the river even if that paves over valuable agricultural land and runs tens of thousands of cars and heavy trucks beside a rare old-growth forest?

“This isn’t about me; this is about land preservation for future generations,” said Riverbend Garden’s Janelle Herbert, whose market garden could one day be obliterated under that scenario, even if a proposed conservation easement goes ahead. She’s asking supporters to speak up as the province starts hosting open houses on the issue this week.

“It’s about you, your kids, the future,” said Herbert. “I’m not an engineer or expert in planning, but let’s put a few extra bucks in and push it south.”

I don't think it's necessary now... But the land between Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan is a priority growth area for the Capital Region Board. In 30 years, the number of jobs by Redwater might increase too. I think it will be needed eventually. Just not anytime soon. It's good to plan.

Planning a Northeast River Crossing: Phase 2 Public Meetings
November 16, 2017

Residents are invited to attend public meetings for phase 2 of the Northeast River Crossing (NERC) Functional Planning Study. This study will identify a potential location for a proposed future roadway and bridge over the North Saskatchewan River, connecting Edmonton and Strathcona County. There are two identical drop-in meetings where feasible alignment options will be shown for public feedback and questions.

Date: Tuesday, November 21
Time: 4 - 8 p.m.
Location: Bethel Lutheran Church, 298 Bethel Drive, Sherwood Park

Date: Wednesday, November 22
Time: 4 - 8 p.m.
Location: Horse Hill School, 19355 Meridian Street NW, Edmonton

This is the second phase in the NERC Functional Planning Study, a joint partnership between the City of Edmonton, the City of Fort Saskatchewan, Strathcona County, Sturgeon County and Alberta Transportation. The proposed bridge would provide an alternate route over the river, connecting Highways 15 (Manning Drive) and 21, improving access to Highway 63 leading north. Kinda silly. It was just a planning exercise. It’s not like the bridge was going to be built anytime soon. But I think it will be necessary down the road. Maybe once Edmonton is 2 million? Kind of short sighted to throw out the work to date just because some residents were unhappy.
