So that is where the Navigation and support centre is…. being placed in the Quarters as well. I thought we were trying to reduce the concentration of agencies in the area supporting the homeless.

Don't fret. Bissell Centre is already at this location, so this does not increase concentration of services in the area. If anything, the closure of the Drop-In Centre means there are net fewer services available in the neighbourhood than in years past.

Building 40 Residences for Homeless Veterans in Edmonton
EDMONTON, AB, Sept. 4, 2025 /CNW/ - Solving Canada's housing challenges requires immediate action to bring down costs. To provide Canadians with increased access to affordable and sustainable housing, the federal government today announced funding of $4.5 million through the Affordable Housing Fund to help build Veterans' House Canada's new supportive housing project in Edmonton.
The announcement was made by the Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada, and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre on behalf of the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada, alongside Amarjeet Sohi, Mayor of Edmonton.
The new building, located in the Athlone neighbourhood of Edmonton, will include 40 bachelor units meant for veterans, as well as amenities such as a fitness room, library, meditation park, community garden, and a park for service dogs.
Veterans' House Canada is a national charity with a mission to build and operate homes that provide affordable, supportive, permanent housing for homeless veterans, as well as on-site services including wrap-around transitional support programs tailored to the treatment of mental health and addiction-related challenges.
As we build a strong Canadian housing sector, purposeful collaboration will be essential. That means working hand-in-hand with the non-profit sector to bring down costs and build homes at a scale and speed not seen since the Second World War.

Doesn't sound like the city will have success with this approach of smaller shelters but more of them spread around the city.
"In a statement emailed to CBC on Wednesday, Amber Edgerton, press secretary for the Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services, said the Alberta government does not support any municipal regulation that would limit the size or number of spaces in an emergency shelter.
"The City of Edmonton's proposal to decrease shelter capacity will only lead to more people being unable to access shelters in their time of need, forcing Edmonton's most vulnerable onto the streets and into encampments," Edgerton said.

Definitely not mixed income. Per the City, they define these supportive housing sites as "for very low to low-income individuals or households that require on-site support services to live independently. Residents sign a lease and pay rent, while also receiving financial help, support with life skills, and support services for health and wellness."

I sure hope they stay on top of security and any complaints of criminal activity or disorder. The social contract is broken when the city doesn’t ensure the safety and well-being of nearby residents. I’m all for “spreading out” services if it’s managed well. If it simply makes 10 neighborhoods have major theft issues vs 1, not sure that’s a win.
Managing public trust will be key for the current council.
