I still hope for this project. Not only would it enhance livability, the city needs more cool amenities and this highlights and builds off our greatest assets. We are not a natural tourist destination so projects like this can make an impact and enhance people's experience of our city.

Yep! I threw a bit about it onto the HLB Wikipedia page a while back:

City Council considered converting the bridge's upper deck into traffic lanes for vehicles on several occasions, starting in 1938. An engineering consultant hired by council to report on the state of the Edmonton Radial Railway recommended that the streetcar tracks on the upper deck of the High Level Bridge be removed, and the deck repurposed for trolley buses.[8] The city sent an engineer to Montreal and Toronto to discuss the idea with CPR and Canadian Bridge Company engineers, but nothing further happened immediately. In 1949, voters approved a plebiscite for the streetcar tracks to be replaced by four lanes of road for vehicles.[9] Project delays caused the capital costs to increase, and the proposal went back to voters with a larger budget in a 1950 plebiscite. A majority of voters approved it once again, but the approval threshold fell below the two-thirds minimum needed for the plebiscite to pass, and the project was cancelled.

Got bored and decided to play around with some HLB replacement ideas. Some of these are realistic and some are a bit out there (one can dream a little, right?). Tried a mix of modern cable-stayed, classic concrete, and steel variations with room for two-way traffic, LRT, and MUP’s. Sharing in case anyone else is interested in nerding out.

I like pics 1, 3 and 4 the best. There's no roofing structure, especially in light of the almost-weekly debacles with 8-wheelers blocking the current HLB.

I do have a couple of important suggestions though:

1. Replace the LRT with HSR and move it to a lower level
2. Remove the MUPs

All that should remain are two-way vehicle traffic and ETS buses (with no stops) on the top level and HSR on the lower level of the new bridge; the old bridge will have MUP and the streetcar.

I totally meant to write HSR instead of LRT lol. But yes, we need to take the street car into account too. These are mostly just mood boards, nothing too concrete or serious.

Wow, perhaps AI has been working over time here! But, there are some great ideas here. In particular, I like the last few more historic looking metal ones which would compliment and echo the High Level bridge well.

I hope after the new 105 Street bridge, we also take making any new bridge here a signature piece for the city as well.
