New trail connections mark milestone in Walterdale Bridge project
September 6, 2018
Edmontonians celebrated the latest milestone in the Walterdale Bridge project with the official opening of the new connecting trails.
“The new Walterdale Bridge clearly demonstrates that Edmonton is not afraid to build the kind of iconic architecture typical in the world’s finest cities,” said Mayor Don Iveson. “The connectivity to the river valley trails will also allow more Edmontonians to enjoy it year-round.”
The completion of the trails in August marks another stage in the project that saw the new Walterdale Bridge open to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in the fall 2017.
“It’s exciting to see the final trail system around the bridge open,” said Adam Laughlin, Deputy City Manager for Integrated Infrastructure Services. “Edmontonians have embraced the new bridge and in the week since the trails opened have taken full advantage of the opportunities to get closer to the North Saskatchewan River and simply be more active in their daily lives.”
Construction on the $155 million Walterdale Bridge Replacement Project began in 2013 with the bridge opening to traffic in September 2017. The signature shared-use path across the bridge opened in November 2017.
