Massive murals behind Rogers Place turning heads in Edmonton
mural-two.jpg

The sound of a road paving machine vibrates the ground behind Rogers Place.

It's a constant noise that Lacey Jane Wilburn and Layla Folkmann have become used to.

"It's been sort of a combat with the construction noise," said Folkmann, who was busy painting one of five larger-than-life portraits just outside the community rink on Monday.

The artists' latest venture consists of five portraits that extend up the surface of 10-metre tall concrete slabs at 105th Avenue and 102nd Street.

The work is both a tribute to, and a reflection of, the people who work and use the nearby Boyle Street Community Services centre.

ROGERS PLACE PUBLIC ART TURNING HEADS
20161007_Figures_ArtTour-1024x576.jpg

On Sunday, October 2 the Around Downtown Public Art Bus Tourmade a stop at Rogers Place to celebrate some of the public art that is hosted inside the new arena.

Alex Janvier’s Tsa Tsa Ke K’e (Iron Foot Place) and Al Henderson’s 9 Figures in Motion with a Puck were a highlight for many on the afternoon’s tour.

“The Sunday art bus tour was a chance for the public to see the newest public art in Edmonton and to meet one of the artists responsible. I was local so it was no hardship to meet the tour and answer a few questions about my work. Art making can be a bit solitary so the chance to talk with people about what I do is a rare pleasure,” said Henderson.

Lol, oh, Edmonton...

City nets $125,000 in Rogers Place parking tickets; Katz Group resumes bid for gravel lot
City officials have handed out more than $125,000 in parking tickets around Rogers Place, and the Katz Group has made a second attempt to win approval for a gravel parking lot it is currently operating nearby.

Earlier this summer, Katz Group applied for the right to continue running up to 800 stalls on two city blocks north of the new arena for 10 years. But after a public backlash, it is now asking for about three years of temporary zoning. The lot doesn’t have proper development permits, a common situation downtown, the city says.

The company has continued to offer parking on the lot while it sorts out the details. Stalls arecurrently listed on the app Parking Panda for $26 a night.

The request for temporary zoning is expected to go to council in December.

I think that a further compromise might be useful here whereby the City offers an 18-month temporary parking permit while the subsurface parking under the ICE site is readied for use. Surely the OEG can see that a sea of surface parking adjacent to Rogers Place is detrimental to their own business model and the need for a surface-lot-free downtown. OEG should be coordinating with the City on LRT use to access OEG events.
