Still not clear when Edmonton's 'ugliest building' will be torn down
When it opened in 1996, the pale green roof and red brick facade made the Baccarat Casino stand out on the northwest corner of 101st Street and 104th Avenue in Edmonton's downtown.

Sometimes described as Edmonton's ugliest building, it hasn't got any better looking since it closed down in September. Its paint is faded and a metal fence surrounds it.

And no one seems to know how long the building will stay standing.

Future of Baccarat Casino building in downtown Edmonton remains a mystery
The official opening of the 27-storey Edmonton Tower was celebrated downtown Wednesday. But as celebrations were underway at the old Staples site, attention couldn’t help but shift to the old Baccarat Casino building across the street.
While the core has changed quite a bit over the past few years, the shuttered green and red building on the corner of 101 Street and 104 Avenue, just a stone’s throw from Rogers Place, is a clear reminder of the so-called “old downtown.”

“The infamous Baccarat… we do have plans for Baccarat,” said Glen Scott, senior VP of real estate with the Katz Group.

While tight-lipped on the details of those plans, Scott said they will be unveiled in due time.

“We’ve got plans for it, I guess is what I would say. That’s better than saying ‘taking the site down’ because there’s other things we can do with the site that don’t involve necessarily taking the site down. I think frankly just people are concerned about the look of the building because some people don’t find it attractive,” Scott said.

“Long-term plans certainly call for something more ambitious than what’s on the Baccarat site right now,” added Mayor Don Iveson. “But market conditions will dictate when that’s able to move ahead.”

Didn't realize this was approved almost a year ago; the building still stands.

@archited They may have to, if I understand Bylaw 8664 correctly:

10.1 Every building permit shall expire and become null and void if the project authorized by such permit is not commenced within ninety (90) days from the date of issue of such permit, or if such project is suspended or abandoned for a period of One Hundred and Twenty (120) days at any time after the project is commenced.

@Daveography, I suppose that the Katz Group could keep the permit active (technically speaking) if they were to do some interior demo slowly and methodically over time. Contra to that notion, they may be interested in applying pressure to the City by leaving the blight of the abandoned structure as a protest against not getting their way with surface parking hopes. I also expect a Katz Group announcement on north-of-104th-Avenue-development soon (maybe within the next 30 days?).

I thought the temp parking was for north of the arena? Didn't realize it was for the Baccarat site, too. Oh well, I guess if it is only until the main parkade opens up.

This is the month when the first building of Phase II is supposed to be announced along with the demolition of the casino.

Not sure if their SDAB appeal went through or not, to operate a temporary surface lot here. In any case, the site is fenced off now:
