Curious if anyone knows how Calgary so quickly has established itself as the filming hub for Alberta? Is it as simple as proximity to mountains, air access for cast & crew, UCP favouring Calgary? This seems to be a quickly growing market in the province that Calgary is dominating with Edmonton becoming a secondary location if needed as seen in the filming of The Last of Us.

do we have a lot that diversifies us from calgary? it's closer to southern hubs for flying into, so that alone, if all us is equal, doesn't help us

The expansion/investment in their larger studio offering is not to be ignored, positioning it as the premier basecamp for any filming in the province. Pair that with more urban settings, mountains that are closer, the badlands, foothills, agri-settings and even arid settings further south and there you have it.

Calgary is closer to a more diverse landscape -- foothills, mountains, badlands, and short-grass prairie; Edmonton by comparison has only parkland and fairly flat terrain (the N. Sask. River Valley helps). There are other Edmonton area assets that have been kept more of a secret -- hundreds of lakes, the vermilion hills of (ahem) Vermilion, boreal forest, and long grass prairie. Calgary also has a world-wide reputation as a cowtown and so immediately lands on the radar of iconoclastic westerns (e.g. Unforgiven and The Revenant). If you ask the average American where Edmonton is you might get a reply like "Isn't it close to Toronto"; if you ask the same question about Calgary they will say "It is near Montana" -- so there is that.

The link doesn’t work for me….all it says is “Fargo” and “Heartland” - are those tv shows? Show me where YYC gets all the good shows…….

Those are both TV shows yes. Another one the link references is Joe Pickett which I haven't seen but watching the trailer
you can tell how the geography makes sense.

It's certainly good to see the business booming in Alberta and Edmonton will get some spillover which doesn't hurt.

Both are significant in production, investment and market capture.
