Looks like we have a homelessness problem that's resulted in a homelessness industry complex. One wonders how much all these executive directors of these agencies make and if they really want to be out of a job (aka to solve homelessness)

Most of them are incredibly underpaid, overworked and compassionate individuals who would give anything to be unemployed. Go volunteer with any of them jist for a day. You are barking up the wrong tree.

Went to school with one of the executive directors. Nicest guy you could know. I'm not shocked he is where is today. He'd give you the shirt, pants and socks off his body if he could.

Homeless industry complex? Perhaps, but all of these organizations arose to fill gaps in our society unfortunately which have gotten bigger and bigger over time. Some like our food bank actually initially believed they would only be around temporarily until governments noticed these gaps and responded.

However, our governments have not, because well partly because homeless people and those in extreme poverty don't vote so they can get away with it. If the provincial government made some changes they could put the food bank out of business tomorrow. Of course they prefer to continue to off load the cost of this instead to others.

I wonder how much attitudes have changed among some people. Ship a problem elsewhere. If we close drug treatment centres there will be no drugs.

Dropped by Padmanadi today (so good, as always). The new Boyle is looking very good, clearly designed to focus entry in the south and east sides of the building, and the upper balcony will allow outside (aka, smoking) access for patrons without them having to be on the street. Very interested in how the community flow will work out when completed. Will be good to have at least one day use space in the core again.

^ I think downtown is improving at a pretty steady pace... there is a lot to look forward to. Granted more has to be done in the realm of social services and drug-use amelioration -- there is a lot of experimentation going on -- homelessness is a problem that absolutely must be solved.

Downtown has been improving, agreed.

Chinatown is as bad as I've ever seen it, particularly east of 101st. Now that the weather has been getting cold and some folks are opting to use the shelters instead of their encampments, it's shocking to see the numbers. Last weekend drove by in the late evening and there was a whole crowd filling up the street in front of the Hope Mission. This centre is so badly needed and hopefully it's open soon for winter.

Yes, some areas of downtown at certain times of the day are improving a lot. You generally don't see as many homeless people during the day in the CBD, but as it has gotten colder recently I have noticed a few more.

Hopefully the new space will be done soon and will help. It is not only very negative for downtown, particularly Chinatown, to have so many people out wandering around, but it is also inhumane for them especially when it is colder.
