The Artists Quarters will be a sustainable development providing home and studio space for multi-generational, mixed-income artists of all artistic disciplines above three floors of space for nonprofit arts organizations. The project will contain over 60 residential units combining live/work and/or separate studio options, single or family size units, equity and non-equity affordable units. The form of tenure will be modeled on the cooperative structure. As common areas are crucial for the creation of community, we envision a communal kitchen and dining area, a shared library, workshop and community garden.

I like it. I'm just hoping the first rendering is the latest iteration. The second looks too messy.

The lack of windows and sporadic balconies is kinda ruining it for me. Feels too much like Remand Centre 2.0.

Of course, no matter how the tower ends up looking, it will bring much needed residents and investment to what is currently a very downtrodden area.

What is this sculpture representing, exactly? I kinda makes me feel uncomfortable.

The two sculptures, called Wild Life by Toronto-based artist Brandon Vickerd, were paid for by tax dollars as part of construction work being done in the area – from a distance, the sculptures appear to be human, but a closer look reveals that in the place of heads and hands, creatures are coming out of clothing that is posed to look like a person.

“This is an urban world, but it’s superimposed on the natural world, which of course is filled with wildlife, so while we walk here, they walk, say there in the river valley,” Katherine Kerr with the Edmonton Arts Council said.

P.S. Journalists and people in general really need to understand that "mixed reviews" are a part of art; some people not liking a piece doesn't make it controversial, whether paid for with public money or not. This is just the nature of art.

An empty pocket of land and a two-storey brick building in Edmonton have been targeted for a mixed-use arts-focused redevelopment. At 102A Avenue and 96 Street in the evolving neighbourhood of The Quarters, Arts Habitat Edmonton and Artists Urban Village have partnered with the City of Edmonton to construct a purpose-built development for artists and arts organizations.
